We depart Shinagawa station bound for Hiroshima after changing trains in Osaka arriving at 12.30pm. After checking into the Granvia Hotel which was right next to the station we grabbed some lunch and decided to catch a taxi to the 'A' Bomb dome and Peace Park, taxi costing us $10 AU. We couldn't find where the trams were to catch them but later we found out that they were on the other side of the Hotel, the south exit. Took some photos of the 'A' bomb dome then walked over to the Peace Park M...
Hiroshima, Chugoku, Japan christine.stoneHappy Birthday to me. After breakfast we caught a local train to Miyajima Station then a JR Ferry to Miyajima Island. It was a very enjoyable, plenty of wild deer and of course lots of souvenir shops. Itsukushima Shrine was first built in the latter half of the sixth century, Itsukushima Shrine was remodeled into the present beautiful structure by Taira-no-Kyiyomori in 1168. Standing in the sea, it is widely known for its grand and unique construction. The sublime and gorgeous appearance disp...
Hiroshima, Japan christine.stoneTravelling by Shinkansen is amazing. Precisely on time. I tried to take a picture of the super modern, streamlined train, but I couldn't because it went too fast. The trains stop for seconds at the platform, so you have to be ready to jump on, otherwise you'll miss it. I'm still amazed by the amount of legroom. I can put my gigantic backpack (which seems to grow everyday) and numerous other bags (which seem to multiply everyday), infront of me and still have more legroom than any other train ...

... each other.
A funny thing struck me: she was looking to the future, while I was looking to the past. I shared this comparison with here. I could see her thinking about it.
I then added, "I hope I too can come to see it as a symbol of peace."
We both smiled.
As some point during our exchange an old man appeared. I didn't even see him come up. He uttered, "You America?"
"Yes, American," I said.
He turned to Tomoko ...
... beautiful upon this realization. They were like Seurat pointilist masterpieces realized from skillfully folded little squares of colorful paper. My admiration was only matched by my surprise:)

ATOMB BOMB QUESTIONNAIRE:
Two young school girls in uniform overcame their Japanese shyness and approached me with pen and notebook in hand.
One said "hello."
In a timid voice she mustered up the energy to ask if I would take a questionnaire.
I said ...
... of the rest of the tour group for some beers and yakitori (like japanese satay things) and eventually headed to bed and had enough time to collect literally every type of Pocky (chocolate coated pretzel stick) - strawberry, white choc, dark choc, milk choc, double coated hazelnut, double coated choc and white choc and strawberry - don't even get me started on the Fran desert sticks too! Available in every corner shop I was soon on a train to Nagasaki in pocky chocky overload!
Hiroshima, Chugoku, Japan ditzyali... apart from the prehistoric bugs everywhere! We met a colony of pregnant cats and their Tom on the walk back ... I hate to admit I had a cuddle, I dont care if they have rabies, I already have flu and some kind of gut disintergrating bacteria anyway - so what is a cat kiss going to do ? Give me the sh!ts .... ah-HA - got you there ... i already got em! hahahahaha.
We were supposed to be going over to the World Heritige site ...
Hiroshima, Japan berndendaphne... But it is actually upon reaching the island that the best views are afforded. Itsukushima Shrine was once considered so important that commoners could only approach by water and disembark directly. Thus they used to pass through the giant tori gate as they entered the shrine. This now has the dubious distinction of being one of the three most photographed sites in Japan, so naturally I ...
Hiroshima (and Kyoto again, and Tokyo), Japan kitch_in_japan... buildings: one which tells of Hiroshima before and after the bombing, and the second, which concentrates on the events of August 6, 1945. Of course the entire presentation is chilling. The history of Hiroshima describes its development as into an important base for the Japanese military, which eventually contributed to its selection as a target. There is documentation of why and how the US developed nuclear weapons in the first place, the options the US had for ...
