To Hiroshima by train

We depart Shinagawa station bound for Hiroshima after changing trains in Osaka arriving at 12.30pm. After checking into the Granvia Hotel which was right next to the station we grabbed some lunch and decided to catch a taxi to the 'A' Bomb dome and Peace Park, taxi costing us $10 AU. We couldn't find where the trams were to catch them but later we found out that they were on the other side of the Hotel, the south exit. Took some photos of the 'A' bomb dome then walked over to the Peace Park M...

Another day in Hiroshima

Happy Birthday to me. After breakfast we caught a local train to Miyajima Station then a JR Ferry to Miyajima Island. It was a very enjoyable, plenty of wild deer and of course lots of souvenir shops. Itsukushima Shrine was first built in the latter half of the sixth century, Itsukushima Shrine was remodeled into the present beautiful structure by Taira-no-Kyiyomori in 1168. Standing in the sea, it is widely known for its grand and unique construction. The sublime and gorgeous appearance disp...

Surprisingly good food

Travelling by Shinkansen is amazing. Precisely on time. I tried to take a picture of the super modern, streamlined train, but I couldn't because it went too fast. The trains stop for seconds at the platform, so you have to be ready to jump on, otherwise you'll miss it. I'm still amazed by the amount of legroom. I can put my gigantic backpack (which seems to grow everyday) and numerous other bags (which seem to multiply everyday), infront of me and still have more legroom than any other train ...

Tuesday: Hiroshima: City of Contrasts

... ever so slowly, I leave the Zone. The reborn city of Hiroshima is there. The words: "Phoenix from the ashes" ring in my ears. Then I see people's faces, hear children laughing, see the signs written in Japanese and English. The trolleys are running, people are crowding the malls, and teens are going to karaoke studios. Okonomiyaki, the dish as synonymous with Hiroshima as baked ...

You kind of just... picked up on what was going on.

Anyway, Nagoya was just the base for our day trips. We were to start the first of our day trips in Kanazawa, a small town in North West Honshu. However, it was not to be. We got on the wrong train, that not only was not covered by our rail pass (you had to pay) it was bound in the absolute wrong direction. Well, the right ...

... about it and is probably home to the most attractive landscapes I've ever seen. Unfortunately, that says little given that my options for landscape are usually limited to bush and rocks, but Rachael says the same. I take it that her word is more trustworthy in this respect. The moss covered stone buildings, shrines, statues and little market streets can keep you fascinated for hours, but whats really amazing is the amount of free roaming deer which cover the ...

DAY TWENTY FOUR

Tooth ache still prevails.... Visited the Peace Memorial Park and the A-dome Memorial- this was where the world's first atomic bomb was dropped and it was a bit touching, especially the Children's Peace memorial. I wasn't able to take pictures because something went a bit dodgy with my camera lens. I think i left it out in the air-con room so when i took it out in the open, the condensation from the heat kept making the lens ...

An hour or so after the blast, black rain fell. People were apparently trying to drink it because they were so thirsty. This rain was filled with radioactive material and poisoned them even more. The cloud of radioactive material spread as far as Korea in some of the ...

The last day of our trip we walked to the Hiroshima Castle then couldn't resist some more Hiroshima-yaki for lunch. We found Okonomimura, a building with 3 floors of small okonomiyaki restaurants. Just crazy! We were welcomed with shouts of Irashaimase...dozo from all the little restaurant owners as we walked by. The tables all full ...
