Left Waterton heading for the border which happens to open at 09:00 - we were fifth in line. No duty free in the middle of nowhere but I did manage to get our remaining firewood across the border by stating with authority that it had no bark and after a quick private consultation we breezed across the border with a Banff jerry-rigged piece of wood with bark on the roof holding up Erik the kayak.
Our first introduction to US ...
... we stayed for two nights and had nice fires with glittering stars. Bogie caught his first ever Cutthroat Trout using a fly - too bad it was a catch and release river since it was the perfect pan size. Also got to see my first ever Dipper; a bird that can play in the rapids and swim underwater, if needed, to catch its meals.
Up early the next day, broke camp and headed for Waterton National Park - “where the Prairies meet ...
For many years we thought that some day we would visit this park - and it's finally some day! Words fail me as we crane our necks this way and that, constantly finding beautiful views to feast upon. We're camping on Lake McDonald, which is crowded but quiet. Lots of older folks like us, now that school is in session. Can't tow the pop-up through the park ...
Glacier National Park, Montana, United States denisita... bisecting the park is the famous Going to the Sun (GTTS) Road-a fifty-mile road hewn into the sides of the mountains, thousands of feet above the valleys and gorges below, crossing the Continental Divide at Logan's Pass. It is also the United States' first international park-connecting with the Canadian Waterton Lakes National Park just across the US-Canada border. Glacier National Park is a treat for all the senses. Close your eyes and inhale ...
West Glacier, Montana, United States carrieandbobWe signed up for a tour of the famous Going to the Sun Road. We did the Crown of the Continent Tour and it was 9.5 hours. Yes, you read that right. I don't know what I was thinking when I booked it. Ok, I was thinking the lady at the reservation desk said that if we had a limited amount of time in the park, this was the way to go to see the whole thing. Wow, it was an assbeating! Wind advisories and sun all day (the roofs roll back ...
West Glacier, Montana, United States tvmed8/17/07 We arrived in Glacier National Park last night. We set up camp and enjoyed the last few hours of our anniversary out of the car. This morning we dropped the dogs off at the "Critter Sitter" so that we were allowed on the hiking trails. Just a heads up for anyone who vacations with their dogs, the park is extremely pet unfriendly. We took the shuttle up to Logan's pass which was an ...
West Glacier, Montana, United States ringsven... pines share the same need for fire that our Florida scrub pines do. If the lodgepole pine forest does not burn, the lodgepole pine's serotinous cones will not open to spread seed for new lodgepole pines. We should feel soooo much safer knowing that it is there, shouldn't we? At the International border we took part in an informal ceremony where we shook hands across the border. However, our US government insists on cutting a 20 ...
Waterton Parks, Alberta, Canada chere... in the nearby valleys and upscale developments, most notably at Big Sky and Moonlight Basin in the Gallatin Valley have changes the culture. It's a town full of young adventurous types, also, with good rafting, fishing and skiing in the area. Bridger Bowl Ski Area is close to town and is known as a great "local" area. We had an excellent late morning breakfast at an upscale little place called Nova, and, though they didn't advertise web ...
West Glacier, Montana, United States jeffanddeb... Hike. From the paper, it says its one of the largest glaciers in the park on a strenuous all-day hike. It's an eleven mile roundtrip and it's a guided hike by a ranger so it should be interesting. I just hope we don't die from hiking too much. 7:16 - Almost at Many Glacier. The campgrounds were full so we had no choice but to stay at the Swift Motor Inn right next to it. $88 for a room w/o television or phone and 2 single beds. Kind of sucks but we have to deal. Now we are ...
