... this area is - and as much as we have enjoyed the tourist sites, we also loved being part of a 'normal' Istanbul neighbourhood'.
Our delightful guide, Olga, led the 6 of us through the narrow back streets to enjoy:

... I first went to Istanbul, and it is mostly the same. Along the way we passed block after block of 4 and 5 story apartment buildings with giant signs in front that said "coming soon!" "A new project by Big Construction Group," etc etc. Acres and acres of old buildings that will be bulldozed and replaced by shiny high rises. The scale of development is breath-taking.

I paid $62 for the cab ride that cost me $40 coming to the airport last year but I was finally home after 14 months.
