After 2 sleepless nights - one filled with anticipation and worries about missing the 3 alarms we'd set, and the other on the long flight - we landed in Tokyo at 9am. First stop, after immigration and customs, was the Japan Rail office to pick up our rail passes and tickets for the Narita Express to Tokyo, Tokyo (which is Tokyo station in the heart of Tokyo). We then hopped on the tube and (after I (emma) had a little grumble about the wheels on my backpack) we found the hotel. We were allowe...
Tokyo, Kanto, Japan emmaandpaulWe woke up early and had noodles for breakfast in our room, it was raining outside, but by the time we made it to the Imperial Palace the sun had come out again. We found a vending machine that sold hot milky tea - genius !! We wandered around the Palace gardens with an ice-cream. Some of the blossom is starting to emerge, and in a few weeks when the Sakura (blossom) festivals start it will be really stunning here (and busy). We then walked through the classy Ginza district and had lunch in a...
Tokyo, Kanto, Japan emmaandpaulOn Tuesday afternoon (9/19), we flew into Tokyo Narita Airport from Hong Kong. We took the train from the airport and it was very efficient and easy to navigate (the Japanese public transportation system is really state of the art - very clean, always on time, extensive, and you can even hear what the conductors are saying... amazing!). Got to the hotel and it was beautiful - we really lucked out with the internet specials! Thanks to hotels.com, we stayed at the Akasaka Prince Hotel in a very...
Tokyo, Japan enp123Got on the train back to Tokyo this morning... a moderately uneventful trip. Sat next to Amy. Truth be told, all we did was play Boggle for most of the 3 hours. Seriously... 17 rounds of Boggle! Word of the day, from our own little Tomoki: "D-O-M-I-N-A-T-E". And none of us saw it! You dominated us indeed, Tom! Well done, Tom, well done! Families are all arriving today and tomorrow... so I let the cast do their thing, and headed out to see some of my old college friends. What?!?! College frien...
Tokyo, Japan nyguy79Got to Tokyo city centre on Tuesday, early afternoon to be greeted by rain and many bowing people. The rain definitely stopped and the sun shone through, but the bowing continues... The panoramic view from the 38th floor of The Akasaka Prince hotel was immense. We could see for miles, and on a clear day we even got a glimpse of Mt. Fuji. All we could do was investigate the area as we were so overwhelmed with the lack of English language and edible food. The next day we went on a 4 mile hike t...

... after we dropped Lucy off at the airport Hitoshi and I went for lunch. Yummy ramen! Now, it's not the cup-o-noodles that you can get in the supermarket - it's a big bowl of yummy broth and curly noodles. I had slices of pork, bamboo shoots, slivered green onions and chili oil. It was SO good!!! I think Jeff will love it almost as much as he loves his Vietnamese Pho!! Ramen is very popular here and there are lots of little ramen restaurants. This one also served very tasty gyoza ...

While many matches last less than a minute, the ceremony, pomp and circumstance of each wrestler's entrance and fight preparation can last a long while and is quite beautiful to watch. During the tournament , each "rishiki" battles a different warrior during each of the 15 days. There is no weight class, so he may find himself lining up against a wrestler who is much bigger and stronger. To begin each match, the wrestlers approach the ring, wash ...
Tokyo, Japan jazzkat6... outdoor sales festival. Had some great authentic pottery, plates, bowls and souveniers. Didn't buy anything, but gave me some ideas for Christmas this year. Also know that the entire afternoon was filled with outragous jokes, hardy laughter and perhaps a traces of pee from said laughter. We headed back to the hotel, and met up with Blythe, Jason and Joanne for a birthday dinner of conveyer belt sushi. Delicious stuff... we're getting to ...
Tokyo, Japan nyguy79... their outlandish outfits, ranging from goth to Hello Kitty. Japan is the consumer electronics mecca, especially the Akihabara district, where the latest of everything can be bought. A 7-floor Sony showroom displays the latest gadgets and high-tech, including home theatres using the super-hi-res Blu-Ray DVD disc. It happens that we have several contacts in Tokyo, so we got to meet up with some friends, which was great ...
Tokyo, Japan thechansGot here around 8 o'clock last night. After they shuffled us around and got all of our things I found my way to my room on the 32nd floor of the Keio plaza hotel...I was dead tired but didn't want to miss out on a night in the big city, especially since I was soon going to be knee-deep in cowpies. So I headed off to find an internet cafe to let a few people know that I had, in fact ...
