      ... the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage so we had to get up at 06:45 for a very early breakfast to allow us to leave the port at 08:00.

      Pinnawela is a government run orphanage for injured and abandoned young elephants. It is 56 miles north west of Colombo and took us about 2 hours to get there by coach. It originally opened in 1975 with just 7 elephants. Today there are 86.

      The elephants are taken down to the river for a bath and a play every morning ...

      ... thin a bit, although it did take an age for the baggage to arrive, it was not good. I got bored and went back upstairs to take a few photos of the scene and found myself engaged in conversation with a couple of young salesmen from the duty free shops who were obviously as bored as I was.
