Xi'an for the Terracotta Warriors

We landed at the People's Hotel of Xian which was part of a Sofitel complex (but not as nice as Sofitel). We took an orientation tour around the city which passes us by the Bell and Drum Towers. We ended up at the Muslim Quarter. We strolled around looking at the food and gifts for sale. We had heard through some travelers we talked to in Vientiane, Laos that this market was the place to shop for cheap stuff. We had fun pricing things and listening to how low the vendors would go on some item...

Sipping Oolong in the Hutong

... took us to the hutong market close by. There were all kinds of spices and vegetables (some we had never seen before) and live fish and dead chickens and ducks and duck feet and quail eggs and eggs boiled in tea. We even saw fish lungs that the people say are simply delicious??<br><br>After the hutong tour we headed to the airport to fly to Xi'an. Imagine my surprise when I was met by our guide, Lee, at the airport. I know Lee from a previous trip to Xi'an ...

Darn but that wall was long...

... too long to walk back around to the south gate. I walk 4 km an hour when I am dawdling, so by my calculations I should have finished after 2 hours at most. But no, two hours later I was still a long way from my goal. When I got back to my hotel, after finally getting back to the starting point and hobbling home via dinner, which was much more plentiful and half the price of my lunch (which makes me think the snack street was a load of bollocks, although thankfully not ...

Don't Want None Unless You Got Buns, Hun

... South. It had a population of 1 million people. THere were 14 East to West streets and 11 North to South streets. There was one outer large wall and 2 smaller inner walls. <br><br>There were many pottery figures displayed. I like the 3 colour civil and military figures, the painted pottery tomb and heavenly guardian, the painted pottery Hunting figure on horseback and camels from the Tang Dynasty (618 - 907). I also liked the painted pottery (red, black and green) men with felt hats and ...

Udflugt til Xi'an: 4.-7. december

Terra Cotta Warriors

... I walked around Xi'an. Of the three cities I've been in so far, I think Xi'an is my favorite. It's obviously a big city, but it has a smaller feel to it. There are less high rises and more buildings that remind me that I'm in China. There were also a lot of nice, classy stores, right along with the markets, and there were tons of people walking around. From where I was in the city I got a very good impression of it.

... caused practically all colour to fade one hour after excavation. Hence the excavation process has been stopped until a technology has been developed that allows for preservation of the remaining specimens. Other sites worth visiting in the city are the bell and drum tower, a legacy of the Ming dynasty and still present in a few Chinese traditionally walled cities. The towers in Xian (probably China's biggest entirely walled city) have regular performances on the ...

Xi'an

... the beds were full, they stuck rugs on the ground for ppl to sleep in!! We did have our most authentic experience yet tho, as in the middle of the night we stopped at a truck stop! We pulled in to the sight of trucks being repaired (their load is really high, so u see ppl literally sitting upright under the truck to fix it) and 2 "diners". We went into the diner slightly further away from the bus, and everyone just kept staring at ...

Terracotta and the Temple of Heaven

... time, we should be less cynical and try the food. The food is much of the fun when travelling, and the twelve of us in our group soon got into a routine. Our food would generally arrive in a variety of bowls which would be placed on a Lazy Susan in the middle of the table. Whatever you put on your own plate you should eat. We also each had a bowl for rice and a cup for green tea. The cup would not have a handle and would therefore ...
