Arrived in Yogyakarta on a wet Wednesday afternoon and spent the rest of the day in the charming surrounds of the hotel. Thursday 29/1 Explored Jalan Malioboro, alive with t-shirt and souvenir vendors along sheltered walkway resembling '5-foot-ways' in Singapore under old shophouses. Visited the Kraton, the seat of the Yogyakarta sultanate. Found Malik (or rather, he found me!) along Jalan Sosrowijyan, who offered to be my driver for the next day. Friday 30/1 Was met at 04:30 hrs at the hotel...
Yogyakarta, Java, Indonesia bryanl
... annoying once more, telling us ludicrous facts in a really insistent manner. He was clearly making people uncomfortable and annoyed, but he had no idea. His most ridiculous was uttered when again banging on about how great he was for being a vegetarian, the erroneous: "Humans are not meant to eat meat". By this I was sick of him, stared back and just said: "Bollocks - that's completely wrong. Everyone knows we're omnivores". His response? "What about cows ...

Yogyakarta, Yogyakarta, Indonesia macfamous... for everything! <br><br> "Mr. Chocolate", as he told me to call him, was another man that I bumped into no less than three times! We spoke about life in Indonesia, stress, where I was going, the local art scene, and education in Indonesia. I was pleased to hear that the children are taught English English, and not American English, and explained the differences to him. After our three encounters, which probably exceeded 30minutes of conversation, he did inevitably try ...
Yogyakarta, Java, Indonesia cereal42... guys collect about 80kg (12 stone) in the baskets and carry it on their shoulders 3km back to the bottom where they get paid about 2 quid for thie efforts. They make the Nepalese porters look like *******!! Anyway I had a go at lifting it and yep I can vouch that it is damned heavy, it makes you realise just how cushy it is back home.<br><br>Another couple of hours back in the bus and we were dropped off at the ferry terminal to go to Bali. It took about 40 minutes to cross the water ...
Yogyakarta, Yogyakarta, Indonesia thebiga... I got into the streets of the company town so people were milling about and socializing as they tend to do in very hot countries when the sun goes down. There was even a small mosque right there in the jungle. I just want to say right here that I am very very tired of being called to prayer 5 times a day. I mean seriously, can you not take the responsibility upon yourself to set your watch and get down with praying to your god? Do you really need some ...
Yogyakarta, Java, Indonesia nealinthailand... a vast difference as compared with the islands of Indonesia I had previously visited. Yogyakarta is a city of 3mm people. Java has a population of 150mm, making it the most populated island on the planet and the largest area with the highest population density on the planet. 3 out of 5 Indonesians live on this island and the majority of its residents are ethnically Javanese. The eastern part of the island, is covered ...

Prambanan, Java, Indonesia doro... differences/significance of each place. As most of you know, world religion fascinates me and I always have so many questions. This was the perfect tour for me and Trev, well, he was pumped to cruise around on a motorbike :-) The bike ride out to our first stop, the temple, was phenomenal. Trev was on the back of the guy's super modern bike and I was on the back of the girl's (maybe) less modern bike. We all sported Super Dave helmets which made me ...
Yogyakarta, Java, Indonesia moncastersWhat a flight! Of all the bumpy, jumpy, turbulent flights I've been on (and we're all aware I've been on maaaany), the flight from Jakarta has to take the cake. The "slight turbulence" that the cabin crew referred to afterward only lasted about 5 minutes but people who weren't buckled in, as instructed, were thrown out of their seats while we plummeted and rocked back and forth for those five minutes. A few had what appeared to be sprains or minor ...
