The metropolis

5 days in Shanghai, great fun place with fortunately not so much to see that we had to leave too much undone. We went up one of the world's tallest buildings, the Jin Mao tower, and got some really nice views and photographs - the observation level is on the 88th floor of the building, it has one of the world's highest bars on the level below, and a hotel - the Grand Hyatt - not too far down too which must have amazing views (for a steep price tag!). We had a couple of great weather days and ...

Walking into the United terminal on Friday morning, I was still getting used to the fact that JFK airport, my long time nemesis, had suddenly become my home runway. In the past, It's always been a harbinger of the chaos that awaits outside the baggage claim. But today, as i set out for Asia, I have an entirely different feeling. And as I quickly find David, Cristin, Aimee and Meredith sitting together in the lounge, I can immediately sense that same quiet anticipation of a long, but exciting ...

X-rays and acrobats

Hello, we arrived at Shanghai yesterday morning after a much nicer night train where there were no defecating children or awful seats- sleepers all the way thank god. Yesterday was spent seeing the town, which is chocabloc, it still being new year,  shopping (as this is the shopping/financial centre of China) and Kathleen getting her foot run over by a taxi. We went to the hospital as I thought an x-ray would be a good idea, and fair do's we were in and out in under an hour (no fracture lucki...

Shanghai

Day 15: Shanghai July 14 - Saturday Shanghai is China's dynamic financial and artistic center. Begin your tour in the heart of old Shanghai at the 16th century Yu Garden. This complex, with its classical architectural details, maze of walkways and reflecting pools, has been a marketplace and social center for over 200 years. In contrast, is the futurist Pudong Developing Area. Transformed from once fertile farmland, this new area is rapidly becoming the symbol of modern China with its world c...

Shanghai

Meet the Jestons! This city is huge with a space age feel. The entire city has been built since the 1990s. We had a great time on our tour with Jessie, our guide. She took us to the Happy Buddah Temple, M5 (an artist area of old warehouses that are know art studios), lunch at Zen and then to the gardens.

My First Day in Shanghai

A little about where we are staying...We are at the Grand Hyatt in Shanghai and it is by far the most luxurious place I have ever stayed in my life. First of all, it is located in the second-tallest building in Shanghai (the tallest is next door) and second, it is absolutely covered in windows. Our room, as well as all the rooms in the hotel feature floor to ceiling windows with unbeatable views. Since the lobby is on the 54th floor, everyone has a stellar view of the entire city. Walking to ...

How Expensive?

After another "interesting" train ride we set off to find the hostel that was affiliated with the one in Xi'an using possibly the worst map in the world, eventually find it and check in, easily the best room we've had yet - Ensuite, although the toilet doesn't look like it works properly. On our way out I ask the wife on reception where the hostel is on the map of downtown Shanghai that we have, it's not on the map cause it's that far away! We get the Metro into town to try and find somewhere...

Peter's Birthday!

(Nicole) One of our delights during this trip is to eat at a really nice restaurant in each country that we visit. For Peter's birthday, we ate at the Grand Cafe at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in the Jin Mao Tower (currently the 4th tallest building holding the highest hotel in the world). I made a reservation for a table near the window to get the gliterring city view. We practically starved ourselves the whole day for this meal. The dinner was a scrumptious buffet of wonderful seafood, meat, and ...

Random things before I leave Shanghai

I have been staying in Shanghai to wait until my parents arrive and give myself a rest before we take off. I was planning to go and see a bunch of sights in town before they got here, but I got sick AGAIN and had to spend my last weekend in my room. I forgot to mention that I have been taking Taiji the whole time I have been here and that my Taiji teacher is really funny. He calls me Stancy, probably because he knows the word "stance" and it sounds sort of like Stacy, I guess. Anyway, he make...
