Had a final breakfast on the terrace about 8am and said farewell to Chico the hotel chihuahua who tried to dry hump my leg during the entire meal. The weather has turned – cold and raining this morning. Alp - who drove me and the night manager to the airport (he lives nearby) – said the forecast was more of the same for …
Another excellent tour of different parts of the city this morning by a professor at Ljubljana University. The day starts out gray and foggy, but the skies clear by the time we arrive on castle hill shortly before noon. After a great lunch beside the river, I spend the afternoon bringing tour details to a close with a brief nap thrown in for good …
We all have lake view rooms in Bled, and I awaken this morning to a fabulous sunrise over the Bled Castle and Julian Alps. We have an option this morning to stay in Bled or to visit the nearby Vintgar Gorge for a hike. Several of us eagerly pile in the van to go on the hike, and we are rewarded with some absolutely fantastic scenery. We stop at a …
The scene was so familiar, I was almost fooled into thinking I was back in Holland. Outside every bar and restaurant, a crowd had gathered to enjoy a beer or an icecream in the sun, while fixing their concentration on one of the television screens. There was an air of anticipation, camaraderie and hope. I bought an icecream and wandered from one …

Historical Traveler Reviews Grand Hotel Union Executive Ljubljana
After reading some varied reviews about the seemingly few hotels Ljubljana has to offer we decided to splash out and stay at the Grand Union.
I treated my girlfriend to a break in Slovenia and we stayed at the Grand Union Executive for 2 nights. The hotel was in a superb location, 2 minutes walk to the river and the Three Bridges so top marks for location. The rooms were obviously suited for the businessman as they didn't have much personality but I hear that many hotels in Ljubljana are targeted at the business user. The rooms were clean and light though we were at the back of the hotel and with that you get noise from the generators and air conditioners. Only a slight gripe. There is a swimming pool at the top of the hotel which isn't open air as I did believe but the views are stunning. There is also a sauna. All hotel staff were attentive and very friendly.
i have to agree with the other positive remarks posted on this hotel. a friend and i stayed at the grand union exec june 3-5 and had a lovely experience. the staff was very friendly and helpful - one of the front desk clerks (katja i think) even called the airline and tracked down my blackberry when i left it on the plane over from zurich. you can't beat the location (although hotel emonec - 2 stars - is just as central and quite a bit less expensive - this was fully booked), the service, and the overall quality of the hotel. this building is featured in many of the postcards of central ljubljana =) i didn't make it down to breakfast but my friend said that it was good, with a nice selection of breads, fruit, cheese, meats, etc. do search around for prices and availabilty, as there is quite a bit of variability out there. booking online was about eur 22 cheaper than contacting the hotel directly.
This is indeed the best hotel in Ljubljana - the Lev, which has one star more and in which I stayed during my last trip to Ljub is less nice - smaller rooms, beds, worse service, worse location, worse breakfast.
Beautiful hotel - ideal retreat
We had a 4 day break at this superb hotel. The service was faultless and unobtrusive in the restaurants. Staff were friendly but not overpowering. The hotel was totally refurbished last year and it shows. Everywhere is gleaming from the brass trimmings to the cutlery! The first time ever I have entered the 10 rating box for everything on a hotel questionnaire. Ideally situated in the old centre, but overlooking pedestrianised area so always quiet at night. For a relaxing getaway I cannot recommend this place highly enough.
Booked in as a 'walk in' and got twin rooms for 100 euro's Upgraded to executive without asking. Staff were excellent and friendly. Rooms superb. Good breakfast. Pool is good size and indoor with rooftop views of the city. The location could not be better.
One of the nicest and most welcoming hotels I have been in for many years.
Great location in the beautiful center of town. Front desk staff really mediocre. The room felt Eastern bloc despite being very modern. Definetly overpriced but fortunately we got a weekend special.
Great time in Ljubljana
We stayed in this hotel for two nights with the family plan. We got a large room with two double beds. The room was very nice and came with nice touches such as bathrobes. The breakfast was very good- a very large buffet with much more selection than most. We ate in the restaurant in the adjacent Executive section and had a very good low price meal. The location was very good. We walked everywhere and that was with me recovering from a stress fracture. The pool is also in the other section and is on top of the building for a very nice view while swimming. There is also an exercise room. We were quite happy with the price since we usually have to pay more for rooms that hold four people and they aren't in such prime locations with great breakfasts.
I stayed for 4 nights in April 2005.
