Things I forgot to write about

Last week I was so wrapped up in my travelers monologue that I forgot to write about my favorite city yet, Medellin. Being the cocaine capitol of the world in the 1980s and early 90s tends to keep the average traveler away. Throughout our Colombian travels, every local told us that Medellin was the MUST SEE Colombian city. They were absolutely right. Before this trip, the one thing I knew about Medellin was Pablo Escobar. I found out quickly that Colombians are not proud at all of that certai...

Not such a great start in Quito, Ecuador

Flew from London, to Madrid and then on to Quito, Ecuador today. Flying in, the city of 1.5 million people looks beautiful, and this was confirmed when we got out of the airport. There are plenty of green, surrounding mountains and loads of grand old buildings. We caught the 25c trolle (tram) to the Old Town to stay in a more picturesque and less touristy area. Found a hotel which is a good deal (and has hot water!), close to internet, laundry and a few small local eateries that seat about 10...

Back in Quito looking for passports!

We arrived back in Quito yesterday (Sunday) after the fabulous Galapagos Islands trip, ready to get our new documents....but today is a public holiday. Cuenca Day - as if that is a good excuse for the Canadian Embassy to take another day off!?! ;-)

Quito

This entry is a tad late because the last few days have been hardcore and nonstop. Quito was awesome. After starting a bit hectic...multiple buses and cabs and no clue where we were going to stay...it turned out nice. After throwing our packs in our rooms, we headed for a stroll. Took a turn down a street and came up upon an area known as La Rosa. A small street closed off to cars with small cafes, bars and shops all along. We decided on a little pizza place where they had $1 Cervezas grande ...

Arrived like zombies

... looked forward to a veritable selection of films to choose from (Andy: "I hope they´ve got Terminator Salvation!") we were outraged on embarking the aircraft when we discovered it was more or less prehistoric. There were no DVD players in the seats, so we were forced to make do with the frankly shocking selection of films that had been pre-allocated (such classics as Hannah Montana and You´ve Got Mail... *****) .It ...

Worst, most interesting, happiest day of my life!

... entertainment. We all watch the dog show and then afterwards get down to business. By the way, No one knows English, besides one officer out of like a hundred who spoke a little. I use my pathetic espanol to get by. I watch the cops kick the **** out of these men. It was so great, hitting them with sticks and such. Blood coming out of their faces while we all laugh. Kicking and such. I ask if I can hit them, but they denied me and ...

Day 1 : My Adventure Begins

... We expect to be hit with a huge taxi charge, but our 30 min tour of the city only cost us $3. Kevin´s is still brushing up on his spanish and when the taxi driver told us tres dollars, Kevin assumed 30 dollars and almost paid that amount to the driver. The sushi was excellent and we had fun trying to order sushi items in Spanish. We retired early after the long day and prepared four our early Flight to Galapagos.
