Back home, before dinner, Enzo and Rosy arrived with a trunk full of gifts for us. They had beer, wine, books, cookies for John, and a large envelope from cousin Ernesto Santoro. I didn't get to see him this trip, so it was nice that he thought of me.
We were tired again (still!), so we went right to bed after another good meal and even better company.
... the coast road and stopped for picnic lunch by a lagoon. We continued to Minturno and checked into our hotel. We were upgraded to the only sea view room which is lovely!
We we walked along the promenade to the south east and it wasn't hard to see that all the beach bars, restaurants and hotels are closed.....end of season!
We ate in the hotel and enjoyed good seafood....glad it's open!!
After 6:15am Mass we got on the bus to go to Monte Cassino. The Abbey for the Benedictines is there. We went up the mountain to the Abbey and had a great tour. The story of the rock is that St. Benedict fell and God made the rock soft so his arm print is there. St. Scholastica liked doves and when she died St. Benedict saw doves. ... We arrived after them, enjoyed our cold lunch and vino, and were gone while they were still smoking themselves out ! Hopefully they got it going before too long. They were a nice group. Back home for a well deserved nap, followed by aperitivo time in the piazza, and then dinner at home based on whatever we had left in the fridge as we were leaving the next morning for Orvieto and Civita di Bagnoregio, about an hour north of ...
