Acclimatise in Quito

A travel blog entry by davidandtracey

Land in Quito on the same day we leave.

At an altitude of 2,850m, Quito is the highest capital in South America. What a shock this Quito is - we fly in in the dark but you sense there are some big hills around. Think i will sleep for a few days.

Hot Day in the City

A travel blog entry by davidandtracey

We woke after a fairly poor night sleep. The view from the 6th floor window was uninspiring but just off to the side you could look up and see a hill with houses going up very high. Wow!

We went straight to the old town via taxi and were overwhelmed with the experience - people, smells, architecture - you name it.
I could not make the …

Days 41-43

Day 41 - Took a quick wander into the 'new town' in the morning, but there isn't much to see or do. Had a bit of lunch and a few drinks, then headed for the airport to get Pauline. Despite all her concerns (missing flights, being quarantined etc) everything went smoothly and we headed for a meal close to the hotel and a few drinks afterwards.

Day 52 - Centre of the earth

Day 52 - Quiet enough day as we had to get laundry sorted, emails checked and phone calls made. Did go to the equator (Mitad del Mundo) which was grand for half a day. Interesting to be able to stand in both hemispheres at the same time. There are also a few tricks you can do to prove you are in the middle of the Northern and Southern hemispheres, …

17/2/2013 to 19/2/2013. We arrived in Quito through the old airport, it was Election Day, they were voting for their President. No alcohol was allowed to be sold from last Friday to tomorrow, Monday. This was to make sure everyone had a clear head when voting. They also enforce no sale of alcohol every Sunday, this is to make sure that people turn …

    Sehr gutes Hotel

    from Raymondocanuck

    Very good hotel

    from Raymondocanuck

Great hotel , nicely located. Staff was adequate but had difficulty with internet access and double billed then argued. Get a receipt if you pay cash for internent as they will also add it to your room account---and argue. Rugs in the rooms were badly soiled and in need of cleaning. Food was very good in dining room.

    Solid Hotel with Great Service

    from P2C

We are a couple that travels independently and recently returned from a one monthe trip to Ecuador.

We stayed in the hotel for 4 nights when we visited Quito and then used the hotel as a stop off between trips to the Galapgos, Coca and Cotopaxi. This hotel caters to business travellers and tours.

The rooms have all been upgraded but there is some variation. All rooms have safes. The first night they had us in a room that was on the street side. We found it very noisy-not with traffic, but with car alarms and police vehicles. We requested a room on the back side of the hotel and received it. The room was larger with a small table and chairs. Over the next few stays, we went into similar types of rooms, and the last one had an airconditioner. I had to book an additional night and the hotel staff quoted $125, which I thought was a bit high. I called up the local tour company ( Enchanted Tours ) that I was dealing with and got a rate of $ 85

The desk staff are very professional and will bend over backwards to help you. Be it fax requirements, photocopying...,it was done quickly and efficiently. They also provided helpful directions and recommendations on attractions, taxis, restaurants. Also has internet service for $ 1 an hour.

As we were undertaking different activities, we generally left bags in the hotel. The area was very secure.

The hotel is centrally located in "grigo land" and it is an easy walk to old town. We generally walked every where during the day and felt very safe. Around the hotel,we also walked at night. When we went further afield at night, we took taxis which were very cheap.

The Buffet breakfast was enormous and the food was hot and tasty.

    Excellent value and excellent service.

    Great location, fabulous breakfast buffet

    from trekkergal

We spent a total of 4 nights at the beginning and end of our trip to Ecuador February 2007. The location is excellent -near one of the craft markets, the Central Bank Museum, and a park with Sunday art exhibit and market. The buffet breakfasts are outstanding and the general hotel staff is super accomodating. However, some of the rooms were incredbily noisy at night due to street activities(weekend partying) and the fluffy down comforters made us so hot we couldn't sleep (no AC for 2 nights). We asked the staff for a lightweight blanket or to remove the down comforter, but they didn't seem to understand our request. However, a too hot room and the street noise were our only complaints. The great breakfasts almost made up for these 2 defects. We are good walkers and walked to the Old Town area from here ( about 45 min. walk). We felt totally safe our whole visit.

    Superb stay!!

    from Maailmanmatkaaja

I stayed with my girlfriend in this hotel on Oct 2005. Our stay was really very terrific! We stayed 3 nights in Grand Hotel Mercure, paid 60 € / night and it was well worth it and more. The service was excellent and hotel staff were extremely polite. We contacted the hotel directly by e-mail to find this great rate.

Especially the room was very good, and we had a separate bed room and a living room, which included another TV, stereo, fridge, sofa, coffee table, water boiler etc. The bed was extremely comfortable and the bath room was very clean, as was the entire room. We even had a balcony, although it was of very little use due to limited view and no furniture there. Quito is also packed with exhaust gases from vehicles, so you might want to minimize the stay outside in the centre. The room was also very quiet and included a safe.

At that time, the hotel had a couple of renovated floors (in which our room was after some complaints) and some unrenovated floors, from which we initially got our room. However, the AC was on too cold and the sink didn't work and I complained about this, and then we got a better room. However, the unrenovated room was still quite good, but not as fine as the one we got.

The location of the hotel is very convenient and it is in the centre of Quito. They also have a gym with an exercise bike and a couple of weights. Hotel also provided guests with 4 free internet computers and the lobby bar is quite hip. We bought our own breakfast to the room (the fridge was quite large) and thus know nothing of the hotel breakfast, which was not included in the rate.

All in all, this hotel was superb and almost comparable to better Hiltons or like, although Quito itself may be quite freaky place!!

    Right Downtown

    from bepaged

We stayed at this hotel for five nights over a period of three weeks, between side trips. Good availability of English speakers made getting information easy. The rooms were suites with a king size bed, living room, dining area, small refrigerator and a bath. The on-site restaurant had good food, reasonably priced. The daily cost of the hotel was reasonable.

The only downside to this hotel was the constant traffic noise during the day and early evening. Also, there is no air conditioning but this wasn't a problem. Quito is at 9000 feet altitude and just opening a window lowered the temperature.

    Great

    from localdoc

wonderfully located hotel with an excellent front desk staff. Breakfast (included in the room charge) was the best for menu choice, courteous waitstaff and available time (starts at 5:00 am !) We loved to walk around town and this was a great home base.

    Great hotel, great location

Nice hotel, great rooms, helpful staff, great breakfast. Walking distance to markets, tour operators and heaps of resturants.

    Best Hotel in South America

    from anonymous

I'm a sales rep who travels all over South America. This is the second time I stay at the Alameda Mercure in Quito. This is by far the best hotel you can find for its price. I wish there was a Mercure Alameda (like this one) in every city of South America. Pillows and comforter are made of goose feathers, bed size is great, room size is huge, bathroom is clean and comfy. Great place makes you feel better than at home!

    Excellent value

    from 7mlf

I just returned from a week in Quito and I stayed at the Mercure Alameda (this hotel seems to be known by several variations of this name!) We found the hotel to be an excellent value. I got a great rate by calling the 800 number listed on the Mercure webpage and speaking to a representative. We had heard about this hotel from a travel agent in the area who booked tours and used this hotel. I could see why. It is in a good location, the rooms were nicely furnished and very clean, the lobby and public facilities were stylishly appointed and the service was excellent. It is probably a step down from the Hilton and Marriott, but not by much and the cost was about half of what those hotels cost. We did not get the buffet breakfast (the hotel offers two rates--one with breakfast and one without) and I was glad we made this choice because they charge about $11 - $14 per person. It is a nice buffet but expensive. Unless you plan on eating a huge breakfast you can get something simpler (in the same hotel restaurant) for a lot cheaper. Food in Quito is very cheap and good!
