Historical Traveler Reviews of Grand Hotel Malta Mgarr

Superb Hotel

from RichC
Having read the other reviews of the Grand we decided to book for an 8 days stay in April/ Early May and were not let down. This hotel has a wonderful setting overlooking Mgarr harbour and the level of service can only be described as outstanding, and nothing is too much trouble (they even re-negotiated our car hire to a cheaper rate with the local representative!). The hotel can also get you a good rate for the helicopter transfer from Malta (£60 return) which is a bargain for such a wonderful view of Valletta harbour / Comino / Gozo.

The rooms are of a good size, and the food is also very good and reasonably priced. There are also several very good restaurants in Mgarr to keep you entertained and take local Mgarr ferry to Comino early to have the island to yourself!! You are also situated close to the car ferry for a quick transfer to Malta. The sea was a little cold (16C) at this time of year, but you can snorkel for 20 minutes or so without problem and there is some amazing places to swim a little off the beaten track.

We found the Grand hotel and Gozo to be the perfect place for a very friendly relaxing holiday away from the tourism of Malta and we shall definitely be back. Of course visit Malta for the day, but stay at the Grand in Gozo and experience real rural Maltese life!

One point to note, the swimming pool is being refurbished and should be re-opened late May 06. The Grand is also being expanded and there is some building work next to the hotel for the coming year, but this is not visible from the main part of the hotel or rooms, so do not let this put you off staying.

Really lovely hotel.

After having stayed at L`Imgarr Hotel in Mgarr for 10 years we were rather suspicious about our new hotel. But we were very well taken care of, had a wonderful seaview suit with a rather big balcony. All the staff were very helpful, attentive and smiling. The food was delicious - we also spent New Years Eve at the hotel, and the gala menu was very tasty and nicely presented. At the moment there is no swimmingpool at the hotel, but the construction is going on and will be finished till June 2006.

As always Mgarr is the best place to stay at the beautiful island of Gozo, and we are coming back many more times.

I have stayed at the Grand at least 10 times over the last 8 years. It never failed to please. In fact it gets better all the time.Sea-view superior rooms are truly spacious, tastefully decorated and utterly relaxing. It's a very quiet hotel on a very quiet little island. The staff, without exception, are gracious, efficient and very friendly.the diningroom is a pleasure;hot buffet breakfast is excellent and dinner is always a treat. If,like me;you appreciate peace and quiet in luxurious surroundings....then The Grand comes highly recommended!

Great views

We stayed for 2 nights late Sept. The staff are very friendly and helpful, and the hotel generally has a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

We had a sea-view room which is certianly worth the extra to watch the comings and goings in the harbour with a chilled glass of wine in the evening! It was large, very comfortable and impeccably clean with a small sofa and chair and a small balcony.

The restaurant has a terrace area, which although next to the road is not unduly disrupted by traffic. The food is excellent and terrific value for money - the best we had in Gozo/Malta. The selection is varied and expertly cooked. We were directed trowards a local wine which was rather good and again terrific value.

The hotel has a free underground car park - very useful if you have a hire car. In short a lovely hotel we would return to.

Grand Hotel - Mgarr

from PaulaThm
We booked the Kempinski Hotel in Feb 05, however as they were less than honest about the building work in progress, we eventually cancelled after amending our dates 3 times, to suit their completion dates. I note with interest that at time of writing (Sept 05) work is STILL continuing. With 3 weeks to go before our holiday and trying not to panic, we managed to book a break at the Grand Hotel.

The hotel could be fabulous. However it is shabby, the pool area in particular is dirty and the actual pool I had to complain about because it was so filthy. Previous swimmers had written their names, in the grime, on the side of the pool!

However, if you can, book a superior sea view room. The rooms are large, airy and with natural lime stone are beautifully cool. They have a big balcony, with loungers, overlooking the harbour. Holiday bliss to sit with a drink, chill and watch the activity. We couldn't fault the staff, who were all helpful and pleasant. We didn't eat dinner in the resturant, however it always seemed busy.

We loved Gozo, Mgarr has several really excellent and decently priced restaurants. I wouldn't return to the Grand unless refurbishment had taken place. The decor is tired, the furnishings old, torn and stained. Water stains on the ceilings. With some cash spent it could be a really lovely hotel.

However, for a relaxing, casual break, I suspect there a few places on the island to beat it.

TOTAL RELAXATION

from Jeff/Yvonne
We have just returned from spending two glorious weeks staying in the grand hotel gozo. returning guests advised us that you will either love it or hate it, i am glad to say if was the former. The Grand was elegantly understated, we had a huge room on the top floor, with a very large balcony, where we spent many happy hours at the end of the day, with a nice drink, just watching the ferries arriving, unloading and re-loading, together with all the activities of the harbour. Not to have had the view would have been a great loss, so well worth upgrading to a sea view. The food was excellent and the staff were courteous and helpful. Probably the hotel is in need of refurbishment, which we understand is planned, but having said that we would definately go back there again. We absolutely loved the charm and serenity of gozo

Lovely place to stay

We enjoyed a very good week at The Grand, staying half board in a Superior Seaview room, which we thought well worth the extra money. The bed was comfortable, the room well furnished, and the view from our balcony (plenty of room to sunbathe or eat) over Mgarr Harbour simply magnetic. The food in the restaurant was varied and of a high standard, and the prices not excessive. The service was good, and the staff very friendly. Housekeeping was the only disappointment, though they were quick to put right the things they forgot!

The free carparking in the basement was wonderful, as the car was cool whenever we got into it!

We would be happy to return there if we go back to Gozo.

Tranquility

from KyotoVisitor
The hotel overlooks the harbor of Mgarr, a little village of Gozo. There is not much around in terms of shopping but we definitely enjoyed our stay at the hotel! The hotel is run by extremely friendly staff, the dinner menue & breakfast buffet was always excellent as well as the service. You should check with the hotel directly rather than booking via internet, that might save you a lot of money. "Countryview" is not really what I consider a "view" but the seaview rooms are excellent, tastefully decorated in Maltesian style. Most enjoyable was the atmosphere in the hotel, soft and tranquille with very calm guests, mostly couples or elderly people. The perfect place to relax! There is no nightlife whatsoever in Mgarr, but the village is ideal to get around: The ferry to the main island of Malta is just 5 minutes from the hotel and Victoria, the capital, can be reached by bus in 10 minutes. All in all we would recommend it highly. We loved our stay.
