Walked 6km in the blazing heat to Tortuga Bay – a long white sandy beach similar to home except for the marine iguanas casually strolling by or sunning themselves on the rocks and sand. Passed through a gigantic cactus forest.

Today's wildlife = Mockingbird finches, stilts, brown pelicans, BLUE FOOTED BOOBIES!!!!!!, land and marine iguanas, white tipped reef sharks, unknown birds, bright orange and red crabs, giant tortoises. And they all leave ...

Life-time dream fulfilled. Flew into the island of Baltra. Flat, barren, dead looking bushes. Was an American military base during WW2. They left behind the airstrip, a de-nuded island and many introduced pests. Short ferry ride to island of Santa Cruz. Three distinct vegetation zones as we crossed the island: first - mangrove swamps, second - giant cactus and incense trees and lava rocks, third - trees from the same family as sunflowers ...

On Santa Cruz we took a long walk to Tortuga Bay which was an amazing white sand beach with trails that lead to a swimming lagoon. We rented bikes one day and road ...

... there were heaps of Penguins around this morning so it was really awesome! We got to swim with penguins, sea lions, pelicans, turtles, lots of fish and one massive stingray! What an awesome way to spend the morning. Ryan is rather obsessed with the penguins so he walked over all the rocks with the camera to a spot where the penguins were sitting out of the water, then he sat there and took heaps of photos and videos ...

... save us money by going now as if we wanted to visit in the future we would have to pay to fly from the UK!

Sarah & Jules, an Australian couple that we had been travelling with in Belize and Guatemala were on a tighter schedule than us and had already visited the islands so armed with their experience and having trawled the internet we started planning our trip. Although it is possible to visit some the islands by public transport we had ...
