... as there were no provisions on the train.
When it was time to cross the Strait to Messina the train carriages are very precisely loaded into a ferry. Once on board we could hop off the train and walk around the ferry to watch the crossing, and a chance to get a coffee. The crossing only takes about 35 mins and that includes loading the trains on and off again. Once the train is off the ferry we were at Messina central ...

We had booked an Etna tour before we left home, and I was hoping it was going to be ok. It was nice to relax on board for the day and soak up the atmosphere. We saw little of Maddi today as her and David moved between the Games Arcade and the Games Room before ...

First port stop on our cruise: Sicily. ( The boot which kicked Italy) Big day today. A very long drive to Mt Etna to spend but 20 minutes there! Would have preferred to spend more time to climb the larger of the volcanic ash mountains. Messina was pretty, as re most little towns in Europe, or so we think. We stopped off en route to taste the variety of sauces, spreads and liqueurs which had been made with the local produce, the pistachio. We tasted it all ...
