... barely see anything. We then went to one of the lookouts which was higher up, and we saw even more nothing. They had a big glass box which you could stand in and look frightened as you gaze down at the massive drop below. But all you could see was white, so it wasn't really that impressive! I think Mont Blanc is a good name for this mountain - it really is completely white! There is a tunnel of ice here, which leads to ...
So we shall start with a vital question from the CERN passport, we need some help in getting the answer right. Which of these particles circulate in the LHC? a) simpletons b) protons c) croutons Hmmm... Being nerds in Geneva, yes we went to CERN. In case there are any non-nerds out there, the LHC is the Large Hadron Collider - an underground particle accelerator! We got a booklet of questions and visited the displays. Unfortunately, ...
... Miserables fame). Incidentally, Besancon is also noted as a major influence in horology and the manufacture of electric bicycles.
A few words about French cuisine. First, it doesn't exist at breakfast time. I quickly tired of the daily morning diet of pain et confiture, confiture et pain, ad nauseum.
One of the good things about having to stay in more expensive hotel accommodation was the likelihood that you could tuck into a delicious bowl of cornflakes ...
... to our lives! We arrived in Geneva just after the tourist information centre closed, but were saved by some mobile 'travel angels' - tourist information people dressed in orange at the train station. They gave us a map with a list of hotels and prices, but we still spent some time hunting down something not too expensive! Relieved to have finally completed the Rhone route, and to have a couple of rest days, we relaxed with some cheap, greasy pizza... ...
... the car with the GPS Navigation was extremely helpful. Instead of using bricks or cement for the highway noise barriers, they use a type of glass or acrylic, it looks really nice. We arrived at the La Maison du Gruyere for a cheese making demonstration. It was nice to see it and afterwards we bought a small cow to remember the place by. We also got a ticket to visit Gruyeres Castle.
We visited the medieval town ...

Historical Traveler Reviews Grand Hotel Kempinski Geneva
We have just returned from a conference- weekend at the Grand Hotel Kempinski Geneva. The hotel is magnificent and we have never experienced such incredible service before. The food at the bar as well at the main restaurant with an unforgettable view over the lake of Geneva - you will never find that anywhere else in Geneva. At the nights - the bar is the Place to be and meet!
The Room had a very good size, bathroom nearly new, the beds are quiet big and the services at the reception and housekeeping are outstanding.
We will hopefully come back with our company to hold another meeting cause the ratio of services and prices are very good and our secretary had also good experience with the banqueting-staff.
Great Views from the Restaurant
I stayed in the Kempinski Hotel Geneva during a conference. The hotel is perfectly located and I got one of the recently renovated rooms. The restaurant has great views over the lake. The bar seems to be very popular as it was full to the rim.
I recently stayed a week at the new Kempinski in Geneva. The hotel is mostly renovated, though not completely different from when it was the Noga Hilton a little more than a year ago. Gone mostly are the day glo plastic walls and other dated items in favor of earth tones etc. Most notably of all the renovations are the second floor restaurants and terraces, which form some of the finest vistas to have a meal or drink in all of Geneva. The pool and spa are only ok , but the rooms are very nice esp the plasma tvs and Hansgrohe fixtures in the bathrooms. The service in the hotel is also top notch -- esp the concierge who will book tours, loan adaptor plugs, or provide an umbrella all for no additional charge. The hotel is located right on Lake Leman (Lake Geneva) and there is a swimming and boat rental location directly across the street. Based on location, service, and cleanliness and quality of finishes, I would rate this hotel well above average as a business hotel, though not on par with a Ritz or Four Seasons. Any discount off the $500 or so summer rack rate and you've found a good deal!
My fiance and me stayed at the hotel in July for the week-end and we loved it! We stayed in one of the rooms with view overlooking the lake which was modern and elegant at the same time. As we had great weather, we took the breakfast on the terrace of the restaurant which has this same perfect view and the buffet had a large choice of fresh breads and swiss specialities.
The renovations are nealy finished. Some of the outlets were still closed and some details will need to get done but I'm definetely going to stay there again when returning to Geneva!
The Hilton is now a Kempinski, but only the name has changed...
I have stayed in this hotel several times over the last 4 years. Originally called the Noga Hilton, then Palace Hilton or something like that and now finally changed owner to become a Kempinski.
Having returned the first time after the 'extensive renovation' I expected to finally find a hotel that is in line with a 5-Star standard. First impression was good, the lobby, the restaurants, hallway etc. are all new and shiny and luxurious.
BUT: The rooms (most of them?) are still the same. I understand that some floors have been 'updated' but the one I stayed on (4th floor - the 'brown' one) is still as it used to be. Horrible and worn off seventies style with color schemes developed by the blind, not to mention the smelling carpet....
The only thing that has changed in the room is a big flat screen TV which is a nice to have but I would have preferred a bathroom with light that doesn't upset my stomach in the morning...
In a nutshell: NEVER AGAIN
A shame because the location is still great and the potential is there...
Loved it. Very nicely renovated
My wife and I spent a weekend at the Kempinski in March and it was just fantastic. We got a room with views to the lake, and it was just great to see the jet d'eau from our bed. We had breakfast in the room both mornings looking at the lake.
As the hotel was still undergoing renovation not all services were availble, but we didn't miss anything but the pool.
The room was spotless clean and nicely decorated, the bathroom was great, with really nice toiletries, and as I already mentioned, the view was fantastic.
Having stayed here several times already as a Hilton, I must say the hotel has extremely improved its image, and service continues to be of the highest standards.
I will continue to stay at the Kempinski on my trips to Geneva, and I would defenetely recommend it to everyone.
