      Two Weeks in Tuscany

Although we have been in Lucca for about a week now, I should start this entry by recounting our last two days in Rome. We put off going to the Vatican Museum, Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's Basilica until the end of our stay because everything we read suggested it was a nightmare to do with children. It was much more enjoyable than we thought it would be. We purchased our tickets online so we didn't have to stand in line outside. ...

... bit to make sure I saw the market. (which I reached only to photograph as they were dismantling it and it was time for me to leave anyway.)

If you have time and take a trip to Italy, don't miss this gem of a town! Enjoy my photos.

Wine Tasting at a Local Farm

Final leg of the trip was a wine tasting at a local farm. Surprisingly, we were turned over to a guide at the farm who spoke neither Italian nor Spanish, but only English and Greek, so ...

Finally, the leaning tower of Pisa

The amount of times that I have been to Pisa is upwards of 10, but I never made it to actually see the leaning tower. Luke was absolutely thrilled that he would be able to see THE leaning tower of Pisa, so it was the first trip that we took. From the train station to the sights is about a 20 minute walk. The town of Pisa is really unimpressive and nothing worthwhile to stop on the way to the tower.

When we reached the tower, I was actually really impressed. ...

      A Lucca day

... however, it was obvious before we'd done 50m that we aren't cut out for tandems! Hence, a quick change to more appropriate machines, and off we went. The great thing about Lucca is the wide city walls which form a circuit of about 4km around the city - so you can cycle (or walk) the whole way, mostly along tree-lined avenues, with lovely views down into the city....all without having to worry about traffic. The early evening ...

      To Cinque Terre

Left Lezzeno for Cinque Terre – had to take the narrow roads on the edge of the Lake for a while – takes a while to get used to!

Once leaving the lakes area the roads were wider but very busy – went through a lot commercial and industrial areas until we got closer to the coast. Most of the second part of the drive was on motorways (tolls!) – again very busy with the cars zooming along at about 130km per ...
