        Piran - Slovenian Istria

Slovenia has only 16 miles of coastline, not much compared to Croatia's thousands of miles of coast when you include all of its islands and peninsulas. The short stretch is quite developed with an industrial port city (Koper), a swank resort (Portoroz), and a few other old towns. The one real attraction, though, is Piran, a beautiful old town on a peninsula similar to Porec and Rovinj in Croatian Istria but ...

It takes about 2 hours from Ljubljana to Portoroz with Piran only another 5 minutes away. These towns are on the Adriatic coast and are sometimes referred to as Slovenia's Riviera. It was already dark now (it gets dark at about 4:30-5pm), so we hitched a ride on the Vaporetto back into Venice to call it a night.  We made a brief stop at the St Maria of Salute Basilica which we hadn't had a chance to see up close and headed back to our hotel. Tomorrow we head by train to Florence, Italy.           ...

... s not what we came for anyway! Then to Burano. The colorful houses on the island would have been much more beautiful to see if it hadn't been cloudy and rainy. We were told by a local that the reason they painted the houses such colorful colors was because the ship captains needed to be able to see the houses to navigate their way through. After we had some pretty good pizza for dinner, we headed back to the main land ...

... for boarding. Just before lunch we had a brief walk around the tourist traps near the train station for aqua and vino before heading back to our amazing hotel and checked out. It was now lunch and we foolishly decided to have our own pizza and not split one, as we were hungry. The photos of the associated food carnage are attached but let's just say it was a food challenge to complete both meals and we both failed! Afterwards ...
