Today we picked up a rental car and headed for the mountains! As with many rentals, we got something bigger than we reserved because that was what they had...it's not too big though, and so far it has treated us well. Grant is getting back into the hang of driving a stick shift and Bonnie is navigating us through the mountain roads. The scenery today was just beautiful. So much green! It was decided to drive the mini-bus to the lot just outside the gates and take the free shuttle ...

... self-guided tour of the castle. This castle has a long history, including playing a role in early Hungarian rebellions that were supported by the Slovenians (don't actually know who liked the Hapsburg family). It was a maze of passageways through every older parts of the castle, and even back into the upper parts of the cave which probably served as the original fortress 1000 years previously. It had everything the boys look for in castles (and is now ...

    Day 31 - Refreshing Trieste

... mood. We decided to wait until it was cooler before venturing out to look at Trieste. Which is a shame because Trieste is a beautiful city, quite different from the other Italian cities I've seen. The streets are wide and noticeably clean! We went out for dinner about 7:30 and soon came upon s crowd watching folk dancing in the street next to a canal. Charming - if not very good! After watching the dancing for a little while ...
