... tour that took in numerous different local industries most of which were set amongst small villages and rice fields. We visited one factory where they made a type of prawn cracker. They worked 12 hour days in the heat and got only two weeks off every year. The money they made was barely enough to live on. On the walls of the factory there was a lot of writing. The workers had written poems about love and loss all over the walls. They smoked, laughed, talked with each other and ...

... s Independence in 1948.
The Portuguese, Dutch and Javanese influence is very evident. Below the building are the prison cells where thousands met their demise..
The menial entry of 1000 rp or $Aus1 would not fund any restorations that's for sure ..

Many attractions kept us occupied ,in and around the square.. the pushbike riding monkey.. complete with face mask, the indo/reggae band sounding ...

After connecting at Singapore I arrived in Jakarta and decided I would brave the public bus into the city rather than a taxi (£20 can be better spent elsewhere). As I approached the bus stop I realised the driver was waiting for me so with a heavy backpack I was forced to adopt a Bridget Jones style girly run, arms flapping and sweating profusely in the 30 degree heat. Made it! Jakarta traffic ...
