After hooking us up with an en-suite fit room for 40pesos each, he ordered us an epic pizza with egg, meat, cheese and thousand island dressing which was awesome after our long drive. <br><br ...

The Hill of Seven Colours

The Lonely Planet tells me that as you move up closer to Bolivia, San Salvador de Jujuy (pronounced Hu-Huy) is where you start to see and feel the proximity. You aint kidding buster!. Arriving in a bus terminal that would disgrace an early 20th century South American Third World Country, I was plunged into a cacophony of colours, noises, sights and smells. The throngs of people sitting on sacks, peddling strange looking foods and generally sitting ...

cloudy forests

Cloudy forests Parque Nacional Calilegua After Cafayate we started to make our way towards Calilegua national park. A preserved area of yungas cloud forest, 1 million hectares, that rises above the clouds into the andes. The area we were in was at around 2,600 meters and is said to be home to 40% of the bird species in Argentina, as well as many mammals, an of course insects. There wasn´t much info on getting there but we gradually made it ...

Jujuy (rhymes with phooey)

... and it slowly dawned on us that this wasn´t just siesta. Some as-yet-to-be-named provincial holiday caused even churches and supermarkets to be closed on our only day of sightseeing in Jujuy. However, we made the best of it as usual, and managed to see the history museum, the outside of all the cathedrals, the place where the municipal market would be if it was open, the place where the river would be if ...

Last Stop in Argentina

Jujuy was my last stop in Argentina, at least for a while. I am definitely going back there one day. Jujuy was a really cool city. It is at the same time kinda scruffy but really nice. I ate some llama while I was there. It was really good, tasted kinda like pork.

Exploring the north

... from my hostel in Iquique. We finally settled on one (not great, but cheap) and ended up sharing a dorm room there. Buses to Argentina from San Pedro only run three times a week, so I bought a ticket for the next bus, on Friday (meaning I had to stay in San Pedro for 3 days). San Pedro (altitude 2,440 meters) has become a really popular tourist town over the last several years. I think every local who lives there works in the tourism industry ...

Tupiza to Salta (Argentina)

After two bus journeys and baggage checks at the border, we entered Argentina and immediately noticed the difference. When booking the tickets from La Quiaca (the town just over the border in Argentina) to Salta a woman was intent on helping us tourists. Due to our bad Spanish, we didn´t understand that a protest for the next 48hours meant that the busses were leaving just outside the town. So, she helped us to get a taxi up to the picket and ...
