Expected train departure: 6:20am Actual departure: 8:30am 12 long, hot, wish-I-could-forget-the-toilet-situatio n, hours later I arrive in Jodhpur Hmm how interesting... -luggage porter asks for 50rps to show me where my seat is and to carry my 40lbs bag (even though the sign says 10rps to carry 40 kgs of luggage) -the vinyl padding on train seats/beds not conducive with hot weather, hence the need for a towel to sleep/sit on; spent countless hours standing instead -men in my coach get really...
Jodhpur, Rajasthan, India alice.hungMany guidebooks have commented on how hard it is for a woman travelling alone in India. Harder still, for the woman travelling with a Palinesque husband who, like a flame to so many moths, attracts the bizarre, the friendly, the not-so-friendly, and the downright irritating on a regular basis. I've lost count of the number of times i have squealed "don't stop, don't stop!" as we halt on a dusty street corner to consult a map or get some water, and are instantly surrounded by rickshaw wallahs ...

Kate, my dearly beloved travel buddy, has fallen ill today. After days of being under-the-weather, I awoke this morning fresh, excited, and strangely convinced by the dream I'd just had that I was in New York City. After making the necessary mental adjustments, such as abandoning my nascent plans to finally go see MoMA, I woke Kate, who, it turned out, had only just gone back to sleep after a full night of illness. After a morning of being (I swear) extremely attentive, it was finally decided...
Jodhpur, Rajasthan, India hammittToday, Kate and I felt sufficiently recovered to hazard our delicate health with a strenuous excursion in high temperatures (we are nothing if not wise.) Our first adventure was breakfast on the hotel rooftop. Three hours later we recovered, and hit the streets of Jodhpur with the renewed enthusiasm of the recently napping. The fort is a massive and impressive building that dominates the landscape for miles around, which should, in theory, make it easy to find. The minute you dive into the Bl...

Actually I think of Jodhpur as the place that kind of changed how I
felt about India. I'd been pretty stressed out for most of my time in
the north, but each evening I went out on my own on the streets of
Jodhpur and wandered up to the bazaars. It was great, I didn't feel
unsafe alone at all (which for me was a bit of a first!) even amongst
the bustling bazaars and I absolutely loved the view of the Meharangarh
Fort from the clocktower at sunset.
I arr...

Rajasthan, Rajasthan, India gazluWe are now in Jodhpur (the 'Blue City'), in Western Rajasthan. The city (the 2nd largest in Rajasthan) a mix of beautiful ancient forts and palaces viewed from serene cafe rooftops with the chaotic hustle and bustle of life at street level below. Walking around the old town is certainly a challenge! Concentration is key if you want to prevent being mowed down by speeding motorcycles, wayward ...
Jodhpur, India griffixHello again. Getting better on writing, still need to find places to upload pictures. They are coming we promise. Spell checks will also be done. I blame the panic we go through in finishing the entry before the power goes or a mouse nibbles the cables. The usual shorter version: - Overnight train from Jaipur to Jodhpur: We slept next to the loudest man in the world. A world class snorer. - Yesterday and today looking around the city and ...
Chaud, chaud, chaud! Comme dirait les ...
Pushkar, India markronyJodhpur is the 'blue city'. Back in the day the old town was inhabited by the priestly 'Brahmin' caste, who painted their houses in their traditional colour. Since it's now a tourist draw, many people in the new town have followed suit. Jodhpur is also the location of one the most famous and impressive forts in India. Situated on a bluff overlooking the town, the fort looks as impregnable as it has proved to ...
