Many guidebooks have commented on how hard it is for a woman travelling alone in India. Harder still, for the woman travelling with a Palinesque husband who, like a flame to so many moths, attracts the bizarre, the friendly, the not-so-friendly, and the downright irritating on a regular basis. I've lost count of the number of times i have squealed "don't stop, don't stop!" as we halt on a dusty street corner to consult a map or get some water, and are instantly surrounded by rickshaw wallahs ...

Today, Kate and I felt sufficiently recovered to hazard our delicate health with a strenuous excursion in high temperatures (we are nothing if not wise.) Our first adventure was breakfast on the hotel rooftop. Three hours later we recovered, and hit the streets of Jodhpur with the renewed enthusiasm of the recently napping. Jodhpur

Actually I think of Jodhpur as the place that kind of changed how I
felt about India. I'd been pretty stressed out for most of my time in
the north, but each evening I went out on my own on the streets of
Jodhpur and wandered up to the bazaars. It was great, I didn't feel
unsafe alone at all (which for me was a bit of a first!) even amongst
the bustling bazaars and I absolutely loved the view of the Meharangarh
Fort from the clocktower at sunset.
