Alabama's hidden gem?

... fun. After the show, we went to lunch with the crew at the wonderful hometown restaurant next door called Lunde's. They stayed open past their normal lunch hours just for us. I had a fried catfish po'boy, and was full for the rest of the day. The guys then invited us to their house this Saturday on our drive up to Decatur, AL from New Orleans. We'll see if we make it, but I bet it would be fun if we do.
Montgomery History Tour

... tour. We saw a historical movie, his study, a mural (that we weren't allowed to photograph) and the pulpit where he preached from. While it felt a bit irreverent, we were welcomed to stand at his pulpit and look out over the pews, as he once did. Wow....what a chill went up my spine when I stood there, put my hands on the sides of the podium, and looked out.

Next, we went over to the Southern Poverty Law Center and looked ...

... saw the design of a thistle as clear as a lightening strike. It was such a powerfully clear dream she jumped up and drew what she had seen. She then found an artisan to carve the thistle design into the staircase. I have included a close up in the pictures. Looking closely at this house reveals more and more detail of fun and imagination!!! The-day-before-Thanksgiving dinners and opening-day-of- hunting dinners are served up here at the long table every year. I can easily imagine how homey ...

... baked us a pork roast with apples and has donated a HUGE bag of freshly cut greens from her garden. Marney cooked them up to be tender and pungent! She added side dishes of fresh black eyed peas (served with Suzys homemade pepper relish) and roasted sweet potato fries to create a dinner we all enjoyed thoroughly. Herbert, Suzy and Young’s youngest son joined us and let

us get to know him. He is in the business of Forestry Management with energy ...

Getting soaked in Montgomery

... More later..

Once in Montgomery I decided to take a ride through town. I'm glad I did. I visited the state capital and the church that Martin Luther King preached at. More importantly that same church was the meeting point for many of the rallies in support of the the bus boycott which was sparked by Rosa Parks. I also visited the Rosa Parks museum and the spot where the bus bench sat.

I also rode by the first white house the Jefferson ...

A Day on the Farm

Believe it or not, there are 54 Championship Holes at the Capitol Hill Golf Course in Prattville, AL that are part of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. Jerry took the opportunity to get in a round of golf and was amazed at the beauty and pristinely maintained course.

While Jerry was hitting a small ball around Prattville, Alex & I spent some time in the pool to cool off. Out in the Middle of Nowhere

We left the Gulf Coast today and headed into Alabama to visit with Aunt Kathy and Uncle D. I used to live with Aunt Kathy and Uncle D in Florida. But I haven't been to visit then in Alabama for the last 5 years. What a great reunion.

My cousin Jackie cooked up some homemade lasagna and these ...

... as no dentures needed, which is an exaggeration). The guy who started Dreamland many years ago had one rule on his premises which is posted in a news article on the wall. NO ******* - he was serious. I presume it taints the tenderness of the ribs, which I suspect may have happened to ours. (May be he was just sensitive to stank) The barbeque sauce was top notch. Done eating - time to join the party. Outside having a smoke ...

The long journey ahead

... highway at Atlanta to look for somewhere to eat only to see lots of men standing either in small groups or on their own beside the road. It would appear they were probably waiting for someone such as construction workers to come a long and offer them a job for the day. It was actually quite sad to see so many looking for work that way with little hope of actually getting anything, especially considering it was quite late in the day.

... coexist comfortably in the same spaces and the same voices. The stars shone brightly on me, night-busing south and sleeping fitfully. I arrived in Montgomery, and i was collected by Laura. Laura who lives with her father on the green banks above the old marina they operate, comfortable on a gentle bend of the Alabama River. Laura who doesn't have a lot of couchsurfing visitors through her neighbourhood, but who happened to have two at once. there was me and there was Kwinci. And ...
