... only minimal clouds around the peak of Mt Fuji, which allowed great photo opportunities. Our destination was Owakudani, a sulphar geiser that didn't have an overpowering stench, but if the sulphur cloud was blown in your direction from the wind you had to hold your breath. The fumes were abrasive to your lungs and is not a pleasant experience. The area is also known for black eggs, boiled in the geiser ...

Here the hot springs, erupting geysers and bubbling pools of boiling mud dominate a fascinating landscape. We take the Hakone rope way from Sounzan down to Togendai on lake Ashinoko. We take a boat journey around the lake which is a water filled volcanic crater with a circumference of 18K. We are now making our way to Tokyo by ...

... get views and photos of Fuji would be from the other side of one of the 5 lakes that surround fuji. I headed for lake kawaguchiko, the biggest of them and spent most of the day walking around it, walking a total of 11 miles. The lake is reminiscent of on of the Italian lakes and was nice enough even without Fuji being there. By mid afternoon I finally got the view I'd been hoping ...

... drove up from Hakone, although only 34 km it took us over an hour. The roads are narrow and winding and the max speed limit we have encountered is 60km per hour. Kilometres mind, not even miles, it was often only 30km p/hr even in quite rural areas. It makes it easier for tourists though so no complaints here. The park itself was fairly small, quite easy to do in a day, but there were still long queues - an ...
