... the major issue was that when I woke up and headed for the train station I found that it was absolutely bucketing down with snow in Tokyo. It was that kind of frigid, bleak, grey, misty day that makes you want to curl up next to the fire with a good book and never leave the house. Today we are travelled to Hakone by speed train. We had been saving our JR pass for the longer transits from Tokyo to Hakone and Hakone to Kyoto, only to find out that we could not use our JR pass all the way to Hakone, even though this was a little disappointing, we soon got over this frustration as the train fare was minimal and time difference only half an hour. ... of the mountain. Far earlier than planned we set off for Hakone and had some lunch before going up the Hakone sky gondola to the Owakudani Valley. Here we went for a walk up to where the geothermal activity was taking place so we could see the sulphur clouds hard boiling eggs and turning them black. It reminded me a lot of Rotorua in New Zealand. We descended back down the mountain on the coach ready to get on our pirate boat across Lake Ashi. From here you ...

... get views and photos of Fuji would be from the other side of one of the 5 lakes that surround fuji. I headed for lake kawaguchiko, the biggest of them and spent most of the day walking around it, walking a total of 11 miles. The lake is reminiscent of on of the Italian lakes and was nice enough even without Fuji being there. By mid afternoon I finally got the view I'd been hoping ...
