Donetsk, Ukraine backstrength... couldn't go to Georgia. Between me and Georgia lied three passport-control posts, one international border, one civil boundary within Georgia, and a whole bunch of problems with my document. Darn! I couldn't go forward towards Lebanon. My best bet would be to simply return to Ukraine. Okay. I looked at my Russian atlas. I picked a spot 700 kilometers away from my present location, a good spot to hop the Russian-Ukrainian border. I ...
Dombasa, Ukraine modernoddyseus... hearing we got our things together and took a 2 hour drive to Lugansk to catch a 7:00 P.M. train to Kiev. It was no fun lugging 3 heavy suit cases and several carry-ons over train tracks to get to our train station. I had read about Ukraine trains, and all I read was true. The restrooms were pretty filthy and the rooms hot. The rooms were much smaller than even cruise ship rooms! The ride was bumpy, but I slept well. We arrived in Kiev at 11:00 A.M. the next morning.
Lugansk, Ukraine arnoquon... to Kiev. Today will be the last time I probably see the kids in Anastasia's class. I will miss playing with them and have become fond of them. However, it will be good to be in Kiev where there is more to see and do. We sure to look back at our Christmas Eve entry as we added photos. We will try to add more Christmas photos when we have time. Downloads are really slow here.
Lugansk, Ukraine arnoquon... really know how to play), and playing with Barbies. She really likes a pocket- sized spirograph I bought , but because it is so small, it is difficult for her. She might like a full-size spirograph. She also is very interested in my jewelry (was she hand-picked for me, or what?!). She loves to read, has a sweet tooth, and has become interested in The Little Mermaid since we explained the origin of her middle name. She has gotten to talk on the phone ...
Lugansk, Ukraine arnoquon... shoes, church clothes, etc. Basically everthing! Hope this helps. I've had a great time buying gifts for the children at the orphanage. We were buying for all the children in Anastasia's class (now 21 children). In addition, we bought approximately 20 pairs of sports shoes (for everyday use) for the older boys in the orphanage. This is where the need was. The director told us that the $1K we gave to the orphanage will be used for renovation and repair of the building.
Lugansk, Ukraine arnoquon... place was a cemetary. They had pictures of the deceased on the graves and lots of picnic tables and benches. I imagine our driver thought "crazy American tourists want to take pictures here". When we returned to Severdonesk, we had the driver drop us off at the orphanage so we could spend some time with Anastasia. Our driver only charged us $40 for the trip. Great price considering he spent all day with us and the cost of automobile fuel now.
Lugansk, Ukraine arnoquon... power lines to the train. It was only an hour delay though. It has been snowing daily, but it usually melts and turns to mush and mud. It's currently 10:30 A.M. here and it has started to snow. Ukraine is a "cash is king" economy. Many places don't accept credit cards or even traveler's checks. At last we've been able to put in pictures. Look also at Dec. 3rd and 4th entries for more pictures.
Lugansk , Ukraine, Ukraine pajasWas very intimidated to be alone on the train with no English speakers. I was located in Car 15, seat 24, with a family - I think two sisters and one of their son and daughter. I was timid at first, not introducing myself. I didn't even put my bag away because I wasn't positive I had the right spot. Before the train had been rolling five minutes 3 train employees came to my car and asked me something. At first I thought it was for my ticket, but as it turned out it was to see if ...
