... on triangular blocks whilst having huge stone tablets placed on their thighs. Nice. Dinner was the local speciality of Hida beef which is highly marbled and cooked at your table. Mine was served with shiitake mushrooms, miso soup, rice and vegetables I didn't recognise. Nice enough but I won't be hunting it out at home. All in all a great start to the Japanese adventure. I travelled to Matsumoto with an old friend from university. On the first day of the trip, we visited Matsumoto Castle and walked around the streets of Matsumoto, tasting some local foods including basashi, sanzokuyaki and sansei, local sake. Photos probably cannot do justice to the awe inspiring first glimpse. As another passenger observed: "It was like something out of a fairy tale." After that, another "traditional" Japanese lunch. This was a little too traditional for most of us, requiring that we sit on the floor. A few of us, ...

... kind of museum where "floats" are on display between the spring festival and the autumn festival where they become part of a parade of floats, a tradition which started in the 17th century. These floats have little in common with North American parade floats, except that they do form a parade on the 4 days of the year they are used. These floats may weigh more than 2 tons, and are hand pulled by however many men are required. The heaviest one has no wheels ...
