Mountain living, onsens and legedary Hida beef!

... when cooked a unique melty experience. Yes i am raving but i'm serious, it was that good and if anything, i've never tasted anything like it. Go gastro-tourism!

The next day was our day of hardcore sightseeing which included going to see the traditional folk village which has reconstructions of various traditional houses, and examples of traditional art such as exceptional woodcutting, in a beautiful country setting. Also on the list were: the old style ...

Night in Matsumoto

... some money on cab fare. Hopefully I can remember to ride on the left side of the street and the other vehicles remember to do the same. I'm also hoping that the rumors of English-speaking guides are true.

Adjusting my expectations... I had thought I'd zip through the castle and get to Kyoto early. Probably not. Everything takes longer than you think.

Sarubobos and Sake Tastings

... in the rain to find supper rather than pay Banyo for it. Baka, cuz supper was fantastic. We had this table-top sterno burner thing with a hot plate on top. On top of that was Hida beef, in Hoba miso. Hida beef is just as good as its cousin, Kobe, although less famous. Hoba miso is a style of cooking where the raw ingredients are grilled in a Japanese magnolia leaf with miso paste. The magnolia gives off a ...

Takayama

Kamikochi: Total Washout--Literally

... and having nowhere to go, decided to recirulate over Kamikochi and dump everything on us. And it was miserable. Not the temp really, because I had a poncho that was a wind barrier and made a bit of a warmth chimney, but the driving snow (which was really tiny hail) on your face and eyes was painful. Since I spent a bit to get there and the weather reports were for some lightening of rain in Matsumoto and maybe some sunshine, I decided to do the 4 hour hike anyway ...

Dag 14 Nog een kasteel
