... offer. The line up at the Foreign Tourist help desk is also rather long so after a bit of looking around we decide to follow someone else who clearly had lined up at the information desk and was armed with all we needed. After confirming that they were wanting to get to the same place that we were, we boarded the correct bus and off we go. Our aim was to get to the Kannawa Hot Springs or Hells of Beppu region. I should have looked up what going to an onsen entailed. I do have to admit that I'm a bit of a prude and not used to changing in locker rooms. This though, almost pushed me to my limits. ... okay. They were pretty to look at and so were their surroundings. But when I got to the 3rd one it got really touristtrappy... Stupid statues, no really big differences and worst of all, the animals... They were kept im such terrible conditions. Especially the hippo looked really depressed in it's little prison. It sucked and I couldn't enjoy those onsen hells anymore... ...

Beppu didn't quite live up to my expectations but they were probably too high. I stayed in a Ryokan - traditional Japanese accommodation - and while it was nice it was a bit run down. The meals were huge but of average quality. The Onsen was the highlight, the outdoor pool heated by the thermal activity in the area. I was staying in Kannawa ...
