Yesterday, I think it was Friday, we woke to drizzling rain. Undaunted we geared up and took a bus to Beppu, another coastal city, which is also one of the most geothermically active regions in Japan. We caught a bus through the snowy hills to the cable car that took us over 3000 metres into the Japanese Alps. Spectacular views at the top and a walk amongst paths carved through the deep, snow walls. Stunning pine trees covered in icicles and glistening snow. What a treat ...

On a lighter note, this is Hagi a town filled with pottery and orange groves. A place to sooth the soul with beauty. Bizarrely there was a gigantic modern building dedicated to ceramics in this quiet little island town. Incredible professional pottery in the museum and shops overflowing with more pots. No vanilla ice cream in this town, only orange. Made a change from seeing green tea ice ...
