... but the smell was pretty overwhelming. It all felt a little contrived and set up for tourists, rather than natural phenomenon.

    Jigoku Mushi Kobo

A quick walk down the hill past some toilets with devil horns on the ladies' and men's signs, and some very colourful posters for what we can only imagine is the local drag show, took us to the Hell Steaming Workshop, Jigoku Mushi Kobo.

... food was simple but very tasty, as evidenced by the stream of locals that ate there.

Yesterday, I think it was Friday, we woke to drizzling rain. Undaunted we geared up and took a bus to Beppu, another coastal city, which is also one of the most geothermically active regions in Japan. We took the coastal road to Beppu and given the drizzle and overcast sky it was not much of a trip until Beppu emerged out of the mist like Brigadoon.
