Even this part of the walk was beautiful though, as it curved round the hillside through a forest of first pine trees then bamboo.
Reaching a Lawson convenience, we grabbed a drink and some buns before heading on to the pretty village of Yufuin, filled with burger shacks, cake shops and locally-crafted goods.

The onsen itself was a the foot of a mountain, through some winding roads and tucked in the middle of nowhere. It looked like it'd be perfect for a relaxing soak. We went on a refreshingly clear night, with just a slight breeze. Perfect for onsen.
And there it was, a sign plastered on the door in friendly letters, "No Tattoos."

We caught a bus through the snowy hills to the cable car that took us over 3000 metres into the Japanese Alps. Spectacular views at the top and a walk amongst paths carved through the deep, snow walls. Stunning pine trees covered in icicles and glistening snow. What a treat ...
