Is het echt al bijna zover?

... zeggen wel meer, heb ik al gemerkt... :-)

Counting the days...

The day of departure is getting closer! And preparations have really started. I bought a good backpack 2 weeks ago, and today I bought a camera. And I also booked a hostel in Sydney for the period around Christmas and New Year's Eve. Because Sydney is a very popular ...

making preparations

As you all probably know, I will go to New Zealand in January 2010. I am doing the study Architecture at Victoria University in Wellington and this means I will be there for at least 5 years.
Everything has been taken care of, and I'm pretty much just counting the ...

... choice. The social element which covers both subsidised renting and housing for sale is allocated through the municipality.

We arrived at the newly constructed railway station which straddles the main road that snakes through the development. First stop was to visit a 14 storey high private sector block, within the higher density housing area. The gas central heating plant was visible adjacent to the railway line, but appeared very modest in scale. This phase ...

... we watched the second half of the game at the uni pub, it was really cool and had good music playing and cheap drinks. jugs come in 1.5lt as opposed to our 1.1lt jugs, once again more bang for your buck. Germany lost, which didnt impress yvonne at all, i suggested just to forget the soccer and just to drink up. We went to city and experinced the amsterdam nightlife. had some febo, an amsterdam thing were you have mini microwaves lining the walls, filled ...

Cafe Terrace and ample precipitation...

A damp side trip to quickly recount for you. We decided to give Liz and Ep a break from us for a couple of days and see another part of the country, a national park east of Vianen that also houses a really good art museum, home to many Van Goghs (which we hadn't seen any of yet this trip). It seemed a good idea - whatever time wasn't spent in the art museum, we could bike around the park's many trails - so under Eric's guidance, le parentals made the ...

Goodbye desert, Bring on Europe

Brrrrr, its cold here. After the heat of Egypt it's nice to be wearing jackets and jeans again. We're just outside Amsterdam now staying with some more friends, Steve and Karin. They live about 30 minutes from the city. The closest centre is Hilversom to the south of Amsterdam, it has a village atmosphere, with narrow streets lined with trees and people on bikes everywhere because it's flat, dead flat, in fact it's so flat that the highest point in the ...

I Dig Utrecht

... of places to get away from it all, though the hustle and bustle they have to deal with is barely comparable to other Western countries. There is always a thick smattering of green areas for everyone to hang out and chill in, and even more impressively, parks with in-built metal recliners for people to bake themselves. Again, another little thing that the Dutch have scored points on. The afternoon barely stood ...

Utrecht Utrecht Utrecht Yeah!

... reputation for being crazy *******s, and these glass tubes of fresh juice are definitely one of those things), and jumped on the first train to Utrecht. An hour passed, morning sun glowed over the Netherlands, and as soon as i arrived in Utrecht i had more than a sneaking suspicion that i'd be there for a while. The place was absolutely gorgeous, leafy, neat tan brick-clad streets, people riding majestically on bikes along specially designed cycling lanes heading into work ...

The Rijksmuseum

Today we headed to Amsterdam to visit The Rijksmuseum. This museum is home to some of the most famous Dutch artwork including paintings by Rembrant, antique Delfware (hand-painted pottery), and paintings by several other artists. The museum is a huge, beautiful building, but unfortunately it is under construction so we weren't actually able to see all of the artwork. We really enjoyed what we saw though! Then we walked around the city and did some last minute Christmas shopping. Nate ...
