... city had grown and followed subsequnet plans, in which the green infrastructure had become ever more important. Originally the city had no green space, but this changed as the city expanded and demand for 'nature' grew. An aspiration of the City Council is to ensure that everyone has access to green space within 300ms which has shaped the plan of the city as it has grown. Remco then presented us with an illustration of how Amsterdam would look in 2048 ...
Leiden, Zuid-Holland, Netherlands phil.kirby... various flavors, regular, raisin, apple, etc. etc. but we all stuck with the regular. So good!

After getting covered in powdered sugar and having to brush each other off, we continued our walk to the bar. On the way, incident #1 of people peeing in the canals (eww, eww ,eeeewww!). Now I know why no one swims in them. Continuing our walk we went past/through several canal side parties that had spilled out from the bars. At the gay bar ...
Leiden, Zuid-Holland, Netherlands hachbach... from my window. According to our guide today, the boats do "technically" still function, but most of them have been moored in the canals for at least 30 years. The kicker. People can live on them FOR FREE!!! I want to know how I get that gig!

Anyway, thats it for now. Enjoy the pictures from our boat trip, as well as some misc. group picss that might be duplicates I've already posted, which I'm sorry for if that is the case.

Love, Heather
Leiden, Zuid-Holland, Netherlands hachbach... and I had planned to go to that yesterday, but that plan was thwarted by my Law prof. We had a meeting at 10 am to discuss our trip to Brussels in 2 weeks. We all thought it was going to be a discussion on details of the trip. It ended up being a 2 hours class on the history and structure of the EU and the Council of Europe. Which was great and I needed an EU refresher, but a little warning would have been much appreciated, since that early ...
Leiden, Zuid-Holland, Netherlands hachbach... believe how smoothly everything went. The only thing that went wrong was that my flight out of JFK was late - so I thought we were screwed, but everything turned out OK and I found Irina at our meeting spot at the airport!

Lugging our bags on and off the trains was not fun. Some Dutch people did help us take our bags off. Only later did Irina mention to me that Dutch ...

Amsterdam, Noord-Holland, Netherlands jv3117... We settled on a taxi, best bet and split between 5 people fairly cheap! The taxi seemed like a good idea until we get into the van, where we were meet by two men who wanted us to ride in their taxi's and pretty much opened my door and grabbed my bags, WELCOME TO AMSTERDAM! Day two was a little more promising than the first night. We headed out in the morning, and rode the tram all the way back to the city center, a ...
Amsterdam, Netherlands abauerly... of people in Amsterdam is 750,000, and the number of bikes is 1,000,000. So basically, the cyclists are plentiful, and fierce! However, riding in Barcelona had prepared us for this so we were practically pros. We rode around for about an hour, then made our way to the train station to join up with a New Amsterdam tour (another of New Europe's cities). This tour was pretty good, with the ...
Amsterdam, Netherlands jessicae... one was in order ...). The high was 27 degrees today! I smelled like gym socks!!! I walked to dinner via Leidseplein and the Dam. After last night's great experience it was back to the Jordaan. I decided to try another guidebook recommendation. If it was too busy the fallback plan was last night's restaurant. Over at Café Luwte the poor (but cute) waitress was quite overwhelmed. The place was very busy - always a good ...
Haarlem, Netherlands pwong... at Woodstock and Pete Townshend of the Who, unaware of who he was or why he was there, booted Abs off the stage. Years later, Pete said he thought Abbie was correct in reminding the hordes that one of ours was rotting in prison. I was a teenager in 1969 and was already a feral Yippie wombat kicking over NYPD sawhorses at demos to end the war in Vietnam. Surrounded by a society that bred young people for the human being lawnmower of war to support the economy of profit ...
