Hanoi II, 9 - 10 May 2009

We are back in Hanoi for a couple of days before heading off to Sapa. The weather is still very gloomy but it has not really rained significantly and we are enjoying pottering around the old quarter. One thing we noticed is that they don't use the pavements here for walking on! They either extend the shops outwards, use the pavement area for preparing and eating food or, mostly, use it for parking their motor bikes and scooters!! Pedestrians have to walk in the road! Definitely getting to lik...

Hanoi III, 14 May 2009

The last of five overnight trains in Vietnam took us back into Hanoi, arriving at just after 05h00 ! We had arranged with our hotel to be picked up and it was welcoming to have someone waiting with name displayed on the platform. Room not available until after 9 so had time to upload the photos from Sapa on one of the hotel's free computers! Just one day in Hanoi this time, before heading off to Bangkok the following morning. Wandered round the old part of town checking out some shops and pic...

Arrival in Vietnam - cool weather at last!

We arrived in Hanoi by plane from Siem Reap and were greeted with temperatures of around 15 degrees - bliss! So, donning jumpers, scarf and gloves (E) and jumper (B) we headed out of the hotel into the first sub-25 degree temperatures we've had since mountain tops in NZ. Our hotel was in the Old Town which is the main place of interest for the tourists. It was very interesting wandering around the old streets and markets seeing areas that have remained largely unchanged over the last few hund...

"lets all settle in and then go walk around"

We finally made it to Hanoi at around 6:30PM. A little bit nervous going through customs, they now have IR camera to check everyones core temperature to see if anyone us having a fever or cold. But I also heard they would just give you a hard time to get some money. But actually things went very smooth, we all got through. Everyone got there luggage and we all entered the city of Hanoi... We are finally here...

Jet Lag in the bag!

The 11 hour plane flight to Tokyo wasn't so bad. We flew American Airlines - which turned out to be comfortable and were pretty good about watching our sleeping and eating so that we would not have jet lag when we arrived in Vietnam. So we arrive in Japan - tried the best rice "cake" sweets we have ever had and immediately boarded a plane to Hanoi. We\ had a 2 hour lay over in Japan and the effects of crossing the international date line despite the "No Jet Lag" homeopathic pills leaves us a ...

food poisoning in Hanoi

It's hard to be unbiased about Hanoi, since A2 hates it and B2 loves it. So, we'll try to describe both sides of the equation for our first glimpse of Vietnam. We read about all the airport scams of drivers taking you to a copy-cat-like hotels, so we pre-booked a reputable hotel and got a pick-up from the airport via the hotel. The traffic was fierce, with cars, buses, motorbikes and bicycles all passing and weaving like mad. Our driver had definitely been a former Formula 1 race car driver -...

Hanoi, Vietnam

Despite a delayed take-off, the flight went well and we picked up our luggage quickly. I have to be careful as there seem to be a lot of backpacks which resemble mine very closely. One time, I was just picking up my bag from the luggage belt when a man came and swooped it out of my hand, just in front of me. Of course, I then realised that it wasn't my bag at all and hope he didn't think I was trying to steal it! We were met by the driver from our hotel as we'd booked online through hostelwor...

No Uncle Ho

We arrived in Hanoi at 4:30 am. We looked around for our driver that is going to pick us up at both exits and all around the parking lot, but we do not see one. So, we hired a taxi and he brought us to Hang Hanh Street which looks like a completely deserted alley at 5:00 am. The driver stopped by Golden Lake and motioned to us that we were here. We do not see our hotel and Bill got out of the cab and started walking down the street. Finally, the driver asks the bell hop next door who tells hi...

Kayaking at Last!

We woke up at 6 am when the junk started up. We had breakfast at 7 am - omelettes with chives, bacon, cucumber, tomato, bread, cheese, not cheese (butter), jam, pears, bananas and tea. We went to a floating village and began our kayaking tour. We were in an area where there were few boats and junks and it was incredible. The scenery is so beautiful. It was calm and a bit sunny. We paddle around and under some of the karst hills. My arms and shoulders are screaming, man I am out of shape! I am...

Booked on recommendation of a friend who has stayed there.

Had an excellent room with view of lake with separate bathroom, fridg, air con, TV and spotlessly clean.

Staff were very friendly and helpful and arranged bookings to Sapa and Halong Bay at very good prices.Great place to meet people fro UK, Canada, US, Sweden etc.

We will go back...I am 68 and my wife 62... no problems.

I travelled with 2 females and had a wonderful stay in Golden sun hotel.. the receptionists are very helpful! All the facilities were very well equipped, with water heater, room heater, television chanels etc.. The staff will help you cal l cab to ensure that u get the best transport and dun get overcharged by the cab drivers.. we left our backpacks in the hotel when we went sapa and halong bay, very safe.. thanks to the staff we opened the gate for us when we return from our sapa trip to halong early in the morning at 5 am.. the location is fanastic, it's at the heart of the city - old quarters. This street is packed with restaurants, bars ,,

the room we had was on balcany side very bright and clean.

highly recommended this place !.

Great Location & Friendly Staff

from canbermuda
The location is excellent, right in the Old Quarter and minutes away from the lake, and Pho 24!

The staff were extremely friendly, however when we arrived on our first night they did not have a room for us, even though we had a confirmed reservation. They put us in a hotel across the street, however it was not as nice as the room we booked and eventually stayed in. The overbooking and putting you in another hotel for the night is very common within Vietnam.

There cafe/restaurant has an excellent view of the Lake.

Overall the staff were very friendly and allowed us to shower in the wee hours of the morning upon our arrival from Sapa and before getting on the bus for Halong Bay.

I would recommend this hotel to anyone who wants to be right in the action of the old quarter.

Nice little place but not without problems

from almag
Generally, very friendly and helpful staff. The two rooms we booked for the four of us were nice and clean. We stayed at this hotel three times ,or at least, we tried to. No problem with our first reservation which we reserved on-line.. The second reservation was "accidentally" misplaced and when we arrived late at night, we were shuffled off to a nasty "replacement" hotel about 5 blocks away. The third time, despite promises to the contrary, our reservations were trashed again in favour of a group booking and we were dragged off to yet another hotel. Oh yeah - think twice about hiring Mrs. Moon's brother to motorcycle taxi you anywhere. He and his friend took my husband and I about 6 blocks and charged us almost what a new taxi charges to go to the airport.

Lovely place, lovely staff

from Cherrytravels
The staff couldn't do enough for us here. We booked in for 2 nights originally but on the first night I had to be rushed into hospital. The staff were so concerned for me and went out of their way to help me with medical paperwork. We had to extend our stay in Hanoi due to me taking ill. However the hotel was full so they transfered us to the sister hotel(Hanoi Guest house) 4 mins walk away. The owner paid for the taxi to take us there and continued to come over to the hotel to help with my medical insurance claim and ask how I was.

The Golden Sun hotel was clean and nicely presented. We had a lovely airy room with little extras like soap, shampoo, toothbrush, slippers, hair dryer and TV.

The internet access was excellent also and free!

I would definately recommend this hotel

Fantastic hotel, loving it

from Boston1019
I am a former business traveler, doing some volunteer work here in Hanoi, so I have seen the best and the worst of hotels. The Golden Sun is terrific - the rooms are clean as a whistle, the rooms on one side have a fabulous view of Hoan Kiem lake, and the staff is terrific. There are middle-aged and young travelers alike, all staying at this hotel.

It is in the middle of the Old City, on a quiet street (hard to find in Hanoi). The value is terrific - my room (a more expensive one) is $25 per night - including breakfast and free internet in each room.

I am traveling alone and have met fellow travelers in the small breakfast room at the top of the hotel and in the lobby where people hang out sharing experiences and asking the highly service-oriented staff what to do and where to go. Fantastic hotel that I am going to recommend to my colleagues.

Excellent Value

from KEVLOVESJULES
We were a group of 5 adults with 3 rooms and we had booked via the net to stay for 4 nights. We had our free pick up from the airport included but when we got there we were one room short but Mrs Moon had arranged a room in a hotel opposite for 1 night. This did concern us a little but the next morning we were all back together again. The rooms were spacious the bathrooms modern and clean,The beds are a little hard but thats how we like them. The staff are fantastic and will do anything for you. Even went out and got us sim cards for the mobiles. The breakfast was standard but good. The breakfast room on the roof was very small. We had a roof room so we were able to have our breakfast in the room without any problems . The location of this hotel is fantastic. There are restaurant all around the hotel. The lake is one street away, and silk street is one street away. Laundry is also very cheap 1us /kilo. Have stayed at the Salute before but this one is far better.

Pleasant surprise

from buchoy
My wife and I were in Hanoi for 3 nights in August and we had booked a room at the Hanoi guesthouse. Since our flight came in at around 11 pm we were completely pleased to be met at the airport by a friendly driver that the guesthouse had sent. The guesthouse as it turned out was overbooked , but the ever so gracious Mrs. Moon more than made up for this by putting us up in her very new and better located Golden Sun hotel . Imagine having the penthouse suite with a balcony on one side and an unrivalled view of Hoa Kiem Lake on the other at no extra cost? That's flexibility that we truly appreciated. By the way the Halong Tour that Mrs Moon booked us on was similarly a winner. You would be doing yourself a favor if you got this tour from her rather than directly from the internet which would cost you easily twice as much money. Emilio from the Philippines.

Excellent value, clean and friendly staff

from Suzetim
We arrived in Hanoi with 3 children.(ages 14,11 and 8 )...I had contacted Mrs Moon by email and booked 2 rooms next to each other. On arrival though, the people in the next room had decided to stay longer so we had 2 rooms on different floors- one floor up,.. The rooms were a reasonable size, beds big and very clean. We couldn't get the triple room so had a mattress on the floor, so that was pretty squashed but no real problem. We weren't charged for the extra mattress...some places do charge you.You had to put a heater on in the bathroom to get hot water...so remember to do that! My son didn't know, they don't tell and had a cold shower.

Mrs Moon was very helpful prior to our trip and arranged for us to be picked up from the airport at no extra cost.

We paid $16 per room = $32 = £17.40 very good value. for one night. The breakfast room was on the top floor with good views but I would say the breakfasts were very average and basic but included in the price of the hotel so OK. You got to choose one dish from a menu. ie. pho, pancakes, egg and bread, bread and jam.

The street was not quiet, it is on a busy street with lots of mopeds and people hanging about and hotels and restaurants, it had lots of character and was great fun. The restaurants were good value and cheap. It wasn't too noisy when we were sleeping.

Mrs Moon had organised our train tickets to Sapa (Lao Cai) I had asked her to do so by email and that was done with no problem by her and her staff. When we arrived we also asked her to book our return tickets from Sapa . She also booked our taxi to the station, we could of got one cheaper but it was so convenient.

An excellent value value hotel in buzzing area, easy to walk around the old quarter and lots to see.

Enjoy

Very lovely Hotel.

from jerrywang
the staff are friendly and speak good english, Especially Mrs Moon the manager is very kind in helping my wife while she was sick. The room we had was quite large and very clean and modern. The bathroom was nice with a good shower. The location was great just beside the Hoan Kiem Lake and in the quite street which is one reason why we decided to stay 8 days longer.

As for the breakfast - absolutely delicious. The best omlets and pancakes I had throughout Vietnam, especially which was served on the Hotel roof-top floor so that we could see the hidden charms of Hanoi.
