Really nice hotel & grounds although you will like us probably arrive in evening and leave first thing in the morning. Manager immediately solved a small problem with our shower

This is the best hotel near the top, but still fairly basic. We missed nothing essential though. We recommend it for those who want to walk up to the rock early in the morning, which we did. Sunrise at the rock is spectacular.
      Food is decent, no problems.

We had an 8am pickup to drive via Bago to Kyaikhtiyo. We were going against the traffic but there's still a lot of it and we seemed to hit the school run too (on all sorts of transport).
We arrive in Bago (NE of Yangon) to Shwemawdaw Paya which I believe is the tallest, although not built on a hill. In its own self-contained complex it's …

'A crowded, windy, potentially vomit-inducing ride up a remote hill simply to look at a big gilded rock is, admittedly, a tough recommendation. But if you ask us, you can't say you’ve been to Myanmar if you haven’t ascended Mt Kyaiktiyo, home to the country’s most important religious pilgrimage site after the Shwedagon Paya in Yangon. The journey may be difficult, but at the top you’ll be rewarded by a scene replete with stunning vistas and ...

We were supposed to meet our guides at 8.00am but it took us longer to get through the border than we thought. Its not like customs and immigration at the airport where everything is well signed and orderly. We lined up at a counter and had to fill out some paperwork, take it to another office, back to the first one and then to another. No standing behind the line and waiting till you're called, everyone is around the ...

Friday night pile the family, some food and a few blankets into the bus to Golden Rock. Drive all night from Yangon to arrive at sunrise. You used climb the steep switchback slopes for hours to get there. But now you just hop on the truck for a joy ride to the top.

Once on the mountain top and after slipping off your shoes, you make your way to the big draw - ...

... to see their excitement about their visit. I would imagine that many of them had saved money to visit and it was like a holiday for them. There are hotels at the top near to the rock but many people were camping outside under plastic awnings. It was a really family affair and people were picnicking. It was more like a seaside resort with all of ...
