Really nice hotel & grounds although you will like us probably arrive in evening and leave first thing in the morning. Manager immediately solved a small problem with our shower

    Best hotel at the top

This is the best hotel near the top, but still fairly basic. We missed nothing essential though. We recommend it for those who want to walk up to the rock early in the morning, which we did. Sunrise at the rock is spectacular.
    Food is decent, no problems.

We had an 8am pickup to drive via Bago to Kyaikhtiyo. We were going against the traffic but there's still a lot of it and we seemed to hit the school run too (on all sorts of transport).
We arrive in Bago (NE of Yangon) to Shwemawdaw Paya which I believe is the tallest, although not built on a hill. In its own self-contained complex it's …

They helped us to book a minibus, it was very posh with leather seats and music etc. We decided to go with that option instead of the weird man with little English. They loaded our bags onto the roof, making them look as light as a feather! We were on our way. We had to go to Yagon, to then get a train to Bagan. Effort. The bus was estimated ...

We then went to the 7/11 to get more snacks, for no apparent reason. I had a coffee and kitkat, which had a bad reaction with my stomach. Oh dear, not me as well! We waited for Jannik to return, then all hailed a taxi to meet Rupa at the rooftop bar. ...

We left our hotel in Yangon in the sunshine only to arrive at the bus station in the pouring rain. Despite our best efforts to keep our stuff and ourselves dry, we were pretty soaked by the time we got on the bus. We couldn't quite believe it when we had the front seats on the bus- practically everywhere else we've been the foreigners are given the ****** seats at the bumpy back of the bus.

'A crowded, windy, potentially vomit-inducing ride up a remote hill simply to look at a big gilded rock is, admittedly, a tough recommendation. But if you ask us, you can't say you’ve been to Myanmar if you haven’t ascended Mt Kyaiktiyo, home to the country’s most important religious pilgrimage site after the Shwedagon Paya in Yangon. The journey may be difficult, but at the top you’ll be rewarded by a scene replete with stunning vistas and ...
