... park alternatives came up with a place called Thom's, housing a family of three elephants adopted into the Thom family for three generations. Good reviews and stressed assurances that they treated the elephants well seemed good enough for us. Arriving at Thom's Elephant Camp we met the owner who explained and arranged everything for us. We would play, feed and hang around with the elephants for a while (something that anyone could do for free if they were visiting or passing ...

... had a sound reputation, however from what we saw, we could not agree. Three very large elephants were sanctioned to a very small area, not even big enough for them to turn around, and one in particular was nodding its head in frustration. ... Hong Son is a much larger town. Our hotel is only about a block from a small lake. The streets around the lake are shut down at night and another night market takes shape. Vendors ring the lake and I pig out on more street food. We watch a woman make dumplings by cooking a rice flour slurry on small platter. The hotel is nicer than the previous night's although it still features the all-in-one bathroom design. This one at least has a curtain. The experience ...

After a cold and bad nights sleep, the guide woke us up for breakfast which he had cooked for us. We had scrambled eggs, toast with jam and pineapple. Deciding against the cold showers, we had a little wonder around the village before saying farewell to the Dutch girls and being picked up to go to the river. We drove for about 40 minutes with a German couple who were doing the rafting with us and our guide for the day who happened to be the owner of the place we'd stayed the night. We ...
