We took a Chinese tour for the 3 hour journey to visit the Hakka village at Yongding. This is a UNESCO World Heritage site. These were communal living areas (sometimes for up to 3,000 people).

We were on a packed coach full of Chinese families. We stopped off at a large supermarket selling goods made by the Tula people in the Hakkas: coffee, tea, shortbread, etc. We passed through beautiful countryside with banana plantations, and tea ...

Took a day trip by car to visit a few Tulou clusters near where I was staying. The Tulou are absolutely stunning. Self contained multi-story villages. They all had wells in the interior courtyard as well as sometimes wells in the living spaces. The one who spoke English explained that one way he ...

... 22” thick wall. The exterior walls are made of large bricks made of a mix of soil and clay with the gluten from sticky rice. The resulting earthen blocks are red/orange in colour, dense and an effective barrier to the heat, cold and robbers! Inside, the walls are plastered smooth and painted white. No other adornments, just basic and comfortable.

Traditionally, one of the houses would house members of a growing and extended family. Once ...

... reaching the panda exhibit. The two pandas are 'married' but hate each other. They are always on opposite sides of the cage : ). Luckily, one of the pandas was sitting lazily on a platform covered in a blanket of bamboo while it chowed down. Every once in a while, she/he would throw the bamboo everywhere then settle down to eat again. We got some very good pictures of this one but the other one had its head in a cave...and no ...
