Journey to the West - X

... chinahighlights .com/dali/attraction/the-scenery-of-can gshan-mountain.htm<br>We avoided paying the 30RMB entrance fee be quitly passing by the ticket office, so as to not make any noise. It was a steep 90 minute or so hike up to the main trail named Cloud Pass. From there we hiked to Seven Dragon Pool and then on to Cangshan Grand Canyon. We were pretty much the only people on the trail aside from some locals ...

Muddy adventures cycling around Lake Erhai

... lunch. Fortunately we found another market and ended up eating a local cold noodle and spices dish they often make at markets in china, and some hot sweet baba bread, at the time it was divine. As we continued west around the lake, the roads got much much worse and turned into mud. This was worsened by the hundreds of construction vehicles, mainly large trucks, that would drive very closely past us, kicking up fumes of dirt. It was extremely unpleasant, but there was no other ...

Off To Dali...

... save hang around the shops and visit an isolated temple or two. It would be a nice run out and a pleasant stop over in the old UNESCO town. Saying an affirmative, we left at ten, in his classy white BMW model, once it was extracted from a nearby underground parking lot. And it was true, the Mexican did speak astonishingly good Mandarin having been resident in China for only 18 months. "At first I didn't understand Ni Hao." It was a different ...

You Want Ganja???

... solved by firing squad, but was a funny experience none the less. During the next three days we were offered drugs more than 40 times -- often while inside restaurants eating breakfast or lunch. Dali was easily my favorite place in Yunnan province. Although it was bustling with tourists and full of hippy clothes stores and vegetarian restaurants, it was situated between a lake and tower mountains and had the charm of a booming Chinese town making the ...

Tea and Ma Zhan!

... so-called tea house.. but sure enough, he was an honest man and we shuffled in the door of a room filled with Chinese culture shortly afterwards. The tea-maidens, for want of a better word, dressed in red and gold qipao's (chinese dresses) and white sports runners(!) served us pears, which tasted like apples and herbed peanuts, along with jasmin tea in tiny flowery cups. As we learned later during the tea-pouring demonstration, the cups are filled to the 3cm mark, leaving 7cm ...

Bye bye Dali

... so. Thousands of people going round, dance shows...Short visit to a butterfly museum and zoo, and get away from this place. This is being the worst day until now. Last visit in Dali, to the Three Pagoda. But before that, a short and stupid stop at a batik factory. No more than 5 minutes wasted there.Perhaps this visit to the Pagoda will save the day. Nice views ...

Dali - Home of the Bai people

... paths up high. I got on the chairlift and climbed up past tombs and through pine forests to the sound of a Chinese woman announcing some message along with the instrumental version of "Take My Breathe Away" by Berlin which was used in the film Top Gun. The trip up took about 25 minutes and I ate my snacks with a good view over the lake and the Old Town. I was the only one on the chairlift. It was much cooler up here so I quickly visited the temple which was nothing ...

The "Hot Springs"

As "compensation" for our co-ordinators being rubbish and for us generally missing out on everything, Mr Zheng said he would pay for kung fu and tai chi lessons for all of us, and a trip to the hot springs. This excited the group greatly - the kung fu lessons were good fun although very tiring, and the hot springs were just the thing to aid our aching muscles and relax our minds in the tranquil surroundings of the ...
