A few nights ago, we took an overnight train from Varanasi to Delhi in 3rd class sleeper with no AC. We were prepared for the worst, but found the car to be a little bit cleaner and cooler than we imagined.. until the car became fully loaded, and we didn't want to kick a family out of one of our seats. Sarah and I ended up sharing a bunk in the back of the car by the bathroom while Carrie layed across our bags towards the middle of the car to protect them.. The bunks are barely big enough for...
Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, India adomingo4Last night was possibly the worst night ever. Being sick alone sucks and the toilet becomes my friend. I wonder what would have happened if I only had the drop, swish toilets. Disaster. So I spent most of the night awake and dying and only in the morning could I fall asleep after downing Tylenol and Imodium like no tomorrow. I awoke at 6:40am feeling fine but I missed my train by 20 mins. Why does this have to happen? So instead of taking the train I got stuck with taking a bus. The worst dec...
Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, India alice.hungThe camel safari was so much fun. The drive to Jaisalmer provided good roads, few people, nice desert scenery, fresh air and a pleasant change from the chaotic road previously encountered and likely to see again. Jaisalmer meaning "The Golden City" has a fort located on a hill where a portion of the population still lives. On walking up into the 900 year old fort there is a myriad of alleys to explore and views onto the outer city. But fort aside, the highlight was a camel safari into the Tha...
Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, India ed.herweynen Being a little behind in my blog..say 7 entries or so...I've decided to start off from the last place I left off as its fresh in my mind and fill in the other spots on my down time!!
Jaisalmer lies in the heart of the Thar Desert and is home to a sandstone fort that is nothing short of magical. Over the week, I've seen a few forts..two in Jaipur and one in Binkaner....as wonderful as they were Jaisalmer's fort has been taken over by locals and it is like nothing I've seen before. ...
Jaisalmer (The Golden City) is a small city less than 60 miles from the border with Pakistan. It was once hugely important because of its location on various trade networks, but after the border with Pakistan was closed, the city's main income dried up, and it seemed to be destined for death. Yet today the city has a very different face than as a wealthy stop on trade routes, its now home to a huge number of Indian Military Units, and the reason we went there... Tourism.

... camel on to the ground and the pain in my groin, which had become a constant dull ache shot up my legs and I was unable to walk for 5 minutes or so. As dinner was being prepared we were joined by some other trekkers and a troup of Indian musicians and a dancer in a beautiful red sari and in the twilight they played and danced for our pleasure while we feasted on traditional Indian dishes and sweet whiskey, a beautiful end to a fascinating day.
Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, India jamesburfordFrom the comfort of our 'Cosy Guesthouse' we went on westwards through the Thar desert to Jaisalmer and the not so friendly fellow at the 'Ratan Palace'. Camel safari's are BIG business out here so we were not his favourite people when we decided to go with 'Mr Desert'(oh yes!) instead of him for our adventure on camel-back. The aforementioned 'Mr D' was hard to turn ...
Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, India bellag... station once, a woman walked up to us and spoke pure indian to which kelsey replied 'no, sorry, we don't have any nepalese rupies' the woman nodded in understanding and went away. 'now kelsey, how the f*** did you know what she wanted?' (just goes to show how kelsey can talk her way out of anything) back to my origional story, after the above, she could take on anything. Using a good deal of sign language, moving her hands in circular motions to indicate that we wanted ...
jaisalmer, Rajasthan, India horsham... a man in a turban with a huge moustasche and a very serious expression standing on a cart whipping a horse which was galloping along the motorway!! He stared back at us as if to say - how strange are you, with no whip, horse or moustasche! (2) We have seen motorbikes with two adults and a baby perched on the handlebars on busy roads ! Motorcycle helmets? Forget it! We have not seen one person wearing one. One guy was going well over 100km per hour ...
Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, India joelrose... silk, you have to sidestep a myriad of stalls selling cups of chai tea, chapati and other nibbles, dodge the persistent clouds of flies and then somehow find your correct carriage. Then there's the spitting. It's without doubt a national pastime. All around you are signs imploring the public to refrain from phlegming up the platforms and yet, young and old are blithely hawking, snorting, projecting a constant stream of gelatinous spew hither and yon. I swear it's ...
