Sleeper Train, Rat Worship, and Camel Rides

A few nights ago, we took an overnight train from Varanasi to Delhi in 3rd class sleeper with no AC. We were prepared for the worst, but found the car to be a little bit cleaner and cooler than we imagined.. until the car became fully loaded, and we didn't want to kick a family out of one of our seats. Sarah and I ended up sharing a bunk in the back of the car by the bathroom while Carrie layed across our bags towards the middle of the car to protect them.. The bunks are barely big enough for...

The toilet - my best friend

Last night was possibly the worst night ever. Being sick alone sucks and the toilet becomes my friend. I wonder what would have happened if I only had the drop, swish toilets. Disaster. So I spent most of the night awake and dying and only in the morning could I fall asleep after downing Tylenol and Imodium like no tomorrow. I awoke at 6:40am feeling fine but I missed my train by 20 mins. Why does this have to happen? So instead of taking the train I got stuck with taking a bus. The worst dec...

Camel Safari

The camel safari was so much fun. The drive to Jaisalmer provided good roads, few people, nice desert scenery, fresh air and a pleasant change from the chaotic road previously encountered and likely to see again. Jaisalmer meaning "The Golden City" has a fort located on a hill where a portion of the population still lives. On walking up into the 900 year old fort there is a myriad of alleys to explore and views onto the outer city. But fort aside, the highlight was a camel safari into the Tha...

The Golden City

Being a little behind in my blog..say 7 entries or so...I've decided to start off from the last place I left off as its fresh in my mind and fill in the other spots on my down time!!

Jaisalmer lies in the heart of the Thar Desert and is home to a sandstone fort that is nothing short of magical. Over the week, I've seen a few forts..two in Jaipur and one in Binkaner....as wonderful as they were Jaisalmer's fort has been taken over by locals and it is like nothing I've seen before. ...

Of Narrow and Ancient Streets

Jaisalmer (The Golden City) is a small city less than 60 miles from the border with Pakistan. It was once hugely important because of its location on various trade networks, but after the border with Pakistan was closed, the city's main income dried up, and it seemed to be destined for death. Yet today the city has a very different face than as a wealthy stop on trade routes, its now home to a huge number of Indian Military Units, and the reason we went there... Tourism.

Most people he...

A Dash to Pakistan?? Sadly No!

... and the convo went like this: Me: I'm afraid to ****. Greg: Welcome to my life! :). Thankfully that problem really only lasted for about 24 hours which is pretty amazing considering some of the things I've been doing. I arrive in Jaisalmer at 2 PM and thankfully my hostel had a ride from the station for me because this was the first place where there were just a ton of people flocking me asking if I needed a rickshaw ride. The hostel wasn't too ...

Camel Trekking

... to get off my camel and walk for a while just to give my body a rest from the constant beating! Lunch was an interesting affair - we game them around 30 pound between the whole group and they went and caught our lunch - yes a goat. After slaughtering (Halal as these guys were Muslim) and cooking it just behind a bush from where we were sitting I really did realise that these guys were multi talented men! The goat ...

Camel trot to Jaiselmer

Today's journey takes approx. 7 hours (A bit ******* the old back and toosh, I'm not as young as I used to be) as we travel along a remote desert road to the yellow sandstone citadel of Jaisalmer. It looks like a scene from 'The Thousand and One Nights' as it rises from flat desert surrounds, Jaisalmer is a centre for nomadic tribespeople who come to trade in the narrow twisting alleys full of markets and ornately carved houses. In the afternoon we ...

Jaisalmer

... the guidebook attests. Although the Lonely Planet advises against staying in the fort we have decided, unsustainably, to stay at Simla Haveli Hotel. My efforts in not showering will hopefully lessen my ecological footprint as it is water use that is the problem. It is a very well maintained place and our room, although pricey, is really nice. There is also a great rooftop on which to enjoy the sunset - and a few Kingfishers. We spend some time ...

... making a racket of noise. Joy. I still preferred the bus to the train though because you were close amongst Indians and you could open the windows for fresh air. Our good friend Ganesha was mounted on an elaborate dashboard shrine dripping with you beaut bedazzler decorations and garlands of flowers and surrounded by a cardboard cut-out of Sai baba that took up half of the bus windshield space. No wonder the driver was hitting all the potholes, he could'nt see ...
