The city called Heraklion, or if you like, Iraklio. Two names for the same place. It's the big island. Once treed and lush, it was clear cut for timber to build ships. The Minoans ruled the seas. It was the whole world then. 5,000 years ago. Give or take a thousand. Imagine deforesting an entire island the size of Crete. We do it every year in BC. Haven't learned much have we? Lisa and i have hit the seawall early. Walking along, we stop to ...

With our dessert in hand and some change we were rushed off to the port to catch our ferry to Crete. This isn't a typical ferry. ... it is said he used to pull himself up! Apparently he was very old. Patmos is lovely as I imagine all the islands are. Interestingly there were eucalyptus trees there which are a bit of a pest as they grow big very quickly. Apparently many people left there after an earthquake in 1956 and many have left recently due to the economic crisis to move to Darwin! Overnight we sailed to Rhodes and docked at daylight. It is just beautiful with the old city and ...

... work though. We were getting hotter, the shade was waning and we were done with the stores. We walked to the other side of town, not far at all, and before us – more blue water and a glorious beach. Now, I wish I had my bathing suit. Oh well.

Now more hot and tired, we decided to return to the ship and rest. We grabbed a bit of lunch, staked out two lounge chairs on the pool deck, and relaxed in ...
