    ... the strike ending.
Also lots of international IAESTE students (most are European) have started placements now in the first week of August and we all met up for food on monday night. A few were at a republica party last night, which was quite good and very organized; you need to prepurchase tickets, they hire security for the gate and there is a last entry time!
Off to Foz this weekend, flying from Campinas tonight, looking forward to not taking a bus!

    Bio-Hydrogen Conference

A travel blog entry by frankcg on Aug 01, 2014

On Thursday and Friday I attended the 4th Brasilian Bio-Hydrogen Conference in Sao Carlos. It was all in Portuguese but I can understand most of the writing. I learnt a lot about bio-hydrogen, because of the numerous Interval for "Coffee Break" that there were, allowing people to tell me about their work in English.
The Brasilian time zone still annoys me, I got up a six, walked to chemistry in Araraquara for 7 and waited ...

Since Monday I've been helping the biodisel team determine physical parameters of a biodisel sample that arrived last week (for this kind they get about 1 a month). Really enjoying it, even if it's more analytical and less research. Going to Sao Carlos again this week for a bio-hydrogen conference. Should be good but it's in ...

A travel blog entry by frankcg on Jul 25, 2014

Today is exactly half way through my internship at UNESP and we visited the Sao Carlos of the University of Sao Paulo, as there is a research group looking into bio-hydrogen. Sao Carlos is about 20 minutes down the road (by car) from Araraquara and we left very early to be there for 8am. I was waiting ready to go at 7:10 (5 minutes before we agreed to leave), but the Brazilian taking us only turned up at 7:30, which ...

Exploring More of Sao Paulo State

... malls. The centre reminded me more of a typical Brazilian city; busy, with lots of shops selling suspect goods (i got a Hollister t-shirt for 10 reals {about £3-£4}).
The center has some nice parks with small craft markets and pretty grand cathedral. There is also a theatre, which apparently one of the best outside Sao Paulo city. Next to this there is a restaurant/bar place called Pinguim (Portuguese for penguin), famous for its chopp (a light beer) and some of ...
