Hotels on Intrepid tours are a bit of a lucky dip and everyone on our food tour thinks they pulled out a winner with this one. Very modern hotel in the middle of an ancient but growing city. We scored a room up on the 10th floor with a great view of Hue. The bed was hard (nothing new there) but comfy, maybe high density foam? Nice bathroom, good water pressure and hot water. Pool definitely too cold to use. Staff were welcoming. Wifi was good with facebook unblocked. Good breakfast.

The overnight train may seem a romantic way to travel, but it was a difficult night to sleep as the bed was, unsurprisingly, rock-hard which made the back sore as well as the hips. The kids didn't seem to mind. Eventually I got up at 6:30 simply because it was more comfortable to stand than to lie down.

Imagine this, travelling on a privately chartered traditional boat, through alleyways of emerald waters, with thousands of majestic limestone islands providing walls to the sea. Each island is between 10 and 30 metres tall and scattered with deep green trees. There is no sound to be heard apart from the hum of the engine and the insects on the …

... The main gate to this was quite impressive with five entrances, one for the emporer, two for civil and military mandarins, and two for the royal elephants. So those are the highlights I guess sorry if it is boring but there was so much history and interesting things here. It was really neat to walk the old cobble roads and image what the city must have been like when it first was founded in the early 1800's. So we stay at a hostel tonight then ...
