... and traditional and Chinese! For once!

The owner Bobby came to meet us and spoke excellent English. He had studied in Australia and set up 3 hostels of the same name and style on his return. We asked him about all the trips he offered, as we really want to visit the Great Wall. However, we do not want to visit the touristy parts but the ruined, untouched areas where noone goes. We have heard that some hostels will offer this but you can only ...

Day of sightseeing

Today was one of the best days we have had. I will be entering three blogs today. The students have been looking forward to the Great Wall since before we came. It was a beautiful day. Some of us took the walk to the top, and others took the easier path. All of us were awed by the magnificence of the Wall. In the afternoon, we visited the Olympic venue. We visited the Bird's Nest and the Water Cube. Some of us ate ice cream and watched people fly kites.

... the wrong turn and found herself on a very steep climb up to tower 8 so made it up to tower 13 about an hour before us. The climb for the rest of us was pretty hard going. The climb from tower to tower was like climbing about 10 flights of stairs. We made it to the final tower in about 2 hours. We had some amazing views on the way up and were surprised to see stalls with full-size chest freezers selling ice creams and drinks along the way. The wall was more impressive than we had ...

... the fireworks. It was as if they'd never seen fireworks before. It was crazy....I swear I thought I was going to be trampled on, but I walked on unscathed! Eventually I got to the subway station at about midnight. This was the first time Beijing subway has been open 24 hours. But the line was so massive that I decided to walk up one stop....but I totally underestimated the distance and was extremely exhausted by the time I got back to the guesthouse ...

What? Socialist in China? Get off the grass

... God.'' ``The only thing I had to buy myself was the microwave and these plastic tulips,'' says 57-year-old villager Wang Fenghua. Although the teachings of Mao serve as the moral compass for the 3,100 people of Nanjie, the real secret to its collective well-being is, well, capitalist: Two dozen village enterprises manufacturing all sorts of things - noodles, beer, pharmaceuticals. One even promotes ``red tourism.'' ``The widening gap between the rich and the poor. Corruption ...

... nobody seemed to want to help. When I thought we would never figure this out, Zoe somehow spotted an English speaking ticketing counter. The lady spoke pretty good English, but it was hard to hear her over the hundreds of people and the extremely loud PA system constantly announcing trains. We finally bought our tickets, which were a little more expensive than we thought, but we did spoil ourselves with soft sleepers. After being ...

... hall of the people to the west...which i went into to look around. the chinese government has its meetings here...the lecture hall/theatre in which they're held can hold 10000 people. apart from that space however, the hall feels more like a slightly dilapidated luxury hotel than it does a house of governance. and all of this is probably the greatest contradiction...modern china is a booming capitalist economy...and no one's trying to hide that fact, least of all the chinese ...

A few new stories

Eventhough my Mom is visiting I still have a little time to read my news, and every now and then I cme across something that makes an impression on me, like these articles: As a loyal Bond-fan I'm delighted to hear that the new Bond-movie, despite being different and with a blond Bond, is actually quite good, you can read the full ...
