“Free Upgrade”

This place sits on top of the hill and commands a great view of the surrounding town. We scored a free upgrade, so fortunately didn't have to fork out the cash. Food portions were quite small for the price you pay (by Ehtiopian standards), but relatively inexpensive by western standards. Rooms were clean and generally well kept. Location was the real drawcard.

Today has some serious history packed into it. We will be exploring the royal compound (home of King Fasilada), the Debra Berhan Selassie Church, King Fasilada's bath, Empress Metewab's castle complex. Won't go into much detail. If you're interested, check out a tour book! Arriving at our hotel (on the highest peak in town) we have a fantastic view …

There was a further 27km of mostly descent to lunch.

After lunch as we …

Part two of my world Odyssey was a 45 day tour through Ethiopia and Kenya. I had booked it before I had experience with self-driving in Africa. I have no doubt that Mozza and I could have tackled it, but the tour was already paid for so I wasn't going to miss it.

To be honest I was actually a little apprehensive. It was an overland tour ( …

"Dit is Afrika, en dit is Tour d'Afrique!" Elke dag is vol verrassingen.

There are many ways to cross the Nile, I discovered. We did it already many times over bridges with our bicycle. We have mostly followed the flow of the Nile ever since Cairo, and from Khartoum on we are now along one of the two rivers creating the Nile, the Blue Nile. But what about crossing it on a donkey, in a boat. I did it. It just happened. …
