Martinique to Trinidad

... celebrations in Trinidad. Martinique was remembered fondly in my mind as having wonderful French cheeses and wines. As we neared the island, our main sail blew out. The good news about sailing in the Caribbean is that there is wind and sun, the bad news is that there is wind and sun. The sun's UV rays eat away at the sails much quicker than anything Alaska can throw at them. But other good news about Martinique is that we found a sail maker there who looked at it ...

New Years Eve........What New Years Eve?

... were all allowed ashore and began to explore the town. As we walked along the shore front they were setting up food stalls and a large stage with musicians doing sound checks preparations for what we assumed would be the New Years Eve party. This was fantastic and Matt was especially keen to experience a New Years in another culture! We were anchored only 200 metres away and although we would probably be deaf in the morning because of the volume coming out of ...

Relatively Speaking

Relatively speaking, the Caribbean weather this winter has been well, stinky. I know this will elicit tears and moaning from some of our family and friends "up north", but the reason we came here was to be really hot and swim a bunch to cool off. While I can say that both of us are sporting tanned skin (not on purpose or from sun bathing), we've rarely been swimming - it just isn't hot enough. We may get warm inside the cabin ...

Heading North

16/04/08, Wednesday, 18:00, St. Pierre, Martinique Had a nice sail up here today - the wind and current were with us. Mountains here are great. Virgin Mary statue overlooking the town. Watched a pod of dolphins play in clear water on our bow. They were so close, I could hear them breathe when they surfaced.

Island of Sun and Rain...

... it is easy to say that I am easily falling into speaking this difficult language and I know that one day it will be as easy and no one will question me! (Thinking...please come soon). :) Right now, I have my last class tomorrow and then my class is going Kayaking in the Mangroves for the afternoon. I am really excited! For the rest of my stay, I will be spending my time either working on my paper (all in French) and at the beach ...

Martinique - a tropical paradise

... even got a couple of free t-shirts from the boys. Driving through some windy, hilly roads in the wet I didn't feel so safe in the rental but Nic's driven in the Kimberley (Aus) for years, so if she can handle that she can handle a couple of treacherous roads, even in our rental bomb. A quick drink in a bar before leaving Fort de France and Nic managed to get some local knowledge about a place we could stay in up the coast, and a few recommended places to visit.

... we had planned and were amazed to find the anchorage overrun with yachts. We had difficulty finding a spot in this deep and notoriously swirly anchorage that would allow us appropriate swing room. Once we did we set our anchor twice only to find ourselves dragging when the wind made abrupt changes. Our choice was to anchor in very deep water or leave. After considerable discussion we decided to head down the coast to an alternate anchorage. Of course by now it was dark. Free ...

Fort de France - again

... Later, two evenings later. I attended a native music festival. I was the only caucasian that attended. I was visible for miles around. A fancy mix of reggea and modern rythms. After a feasty night, I drove south to St. Anne and rented a cottage for the remains of my stay at Martinique. Suddenly I had to go to FdF and my flight back to europe. A nice vacation, after all.
