Well, here is my first entry in Beijing. It's almost 7:30am on July 17th for those back home, but I think I've got my body convinced that it is 10:30pm. We arrived yesterday at a little after 3pm. After getting to the hotel and freshening up, we were taken to a restaurant for our first meal. It was REALLY good (I'm totally digging the eggplant here) but I was so tired as my body was telling my brain that it was 4am and that it should be in bed sleeping, and not eating supper. After a decent ...
Beijing, China cdubinskyToday we attended a government run (and therefore best prices available and the product comes with a guarantee card) Jade factory. I'm not sure that factory is the right word as the carvings are all done by individual people but the place is huge, immense, enormous. I've never seen so much Jade in my life, from green, to grey, to white flecked with purple. It's beautiful stuff and you can actually hear the quality difference between the types of Jade. We saw jewellery and intricate carvings a...
Beijing, China cdubinskyToday we arrived into Beijing in a cloud of fog. After the craziness we were tired and ready for a nice nights sleep. We had practiced our Mandarin on the plane. I wanted to be a good American ambassador and show my enthusiasm to learn about China and embrace the culture. I was so excited to use what I had learned. The man holding the friendly planet sign stood stoically in the baggage claim area. I walked up and nervously struggled to say "Ne-how. Wo da ming szu shou Jurica Laura" (Hello, my...
Beijing, China coryandlauraWhat a long flight! After spending approx. 12 hours on an airplane from San Francisco in economy class, I was ready to stretch my legs - even though it was against herded crowds at the Beijing airport (PEK). First stop/purchase: a 28 yuen mocha from Starbuck's! $1 = 6.9894 Yuen.
Beijing, China djasia I am finally getting around to the blog a day and a half since we got here. Most of the details are reserved for the book / movie deal but here are a few pix.
The reunion went better than we imagined - except the media was crazy !! There were so many tv cameras and reporters there when we walked in I thought we were going to get trampled !
Enjoy the pix - I have much more to tell later.

China is an amazing place and rapidly developing. The larger cities are as advanced as western cities and some ways even more so. Beijing is a modern, vibrant city that is booming and a very exciting place to be. We arrived during the 60th anniversary celebrations and the streets were awash with very excited people. This place is totally capitalist in all but voting make no mistake about it. There are ...

... your cups... was a good experience but i think we both prefer the crispy style to pure fat running down your throat. We both felt wuite sick afterwards !!! I cant recall what else we have done from my memory now, but we extended our stay at the Red Latern Hostel as it is such a nice place, and i will be sad to not wake up to the chirping duckling every morning. We have not been affected by the earthquake that hit yesterday ...
Beijing, China ouradventures08... long grey wispy beard followed me through both of my circles. The thing that made me susceptible to this type of hawker was that they were nice, superficially nice of course, but nice. I can deal with the Indian style of salesman that is aggressive and pushy because I feel every bit of justification to tell them to take a hike. However when they are smiling and annoyingly offering you a hand on some of ...
Beijing, China gajemison... I quickly got up on the pretence that i needed to stretch my legs, gathered my friends and made a hasty retreat. That guy was pure Paedophile material, creepy and dark. But alls well that ends well, we were back in our hostel in no time, conked out and didn't wake up til early afternoon today. I have met some brilliant people on my travels so far and it's only been about ten days... i wonder what other marvellous adventures lie ahead.
Beijing, China jazzyjeff... her best test scores in high school awarded her a scholarship to Remnin to study Economics, so that's what she's doing, and not surprisingly she was fascinated by the freedom I have to choose where I wanted to go and what I wanted to study), and she told me about how she wants to do an exchange program at MIT in the next year or two. She first took me to her apartment where she lives with her five other roommates, most of which she gets along with. I asked if she goes ...
