... and amongst themselves.
We discuss the economics of the hostel. Roughly, she pulls in $1,000/mo in revenue. $600/mo pays her rental costs. She has another $100/mo in utilities. It is enough to pay her bills and in Romania, she is doing pretty well. The extra $ comes in from tours and she freelances as a limo driver for one of the big hotels. She had a 3 AM airport pickup later this evening. She works really hard.
... me with the info on the one bus and calls to confirm that it will be running. Until this point, I was not even sure that it was possible (without backtracking way South to get around the mountains). Valerie, the only other person at the hostel, is on the same bus. The bus is an experience. It is a 7 hour trip and apparently such luxuries as shock absorbers are skipped. The music is awful, a mix of 50% Romanian folk, 30% urban, 20% euro-pop. The ride itself is beautiful. The ...

... and where cows and horse-drawn carts are a very common cause of traffic jams on the road. Many of the young men of the region have gone to work in Western Europe and they send money back home which is used to built these new houses, but the old traditional culture is still very much alive in these parts. One wonders though what will happen to this culture when all the young men come back...
Gura Humorului, Romania tavini(S) Well, our travel luck holds. We roll into Gura Humorului (say that 3 times fast - ok don't - too hard) at 8 with no place to stay and little help from our Rough Guide. Or rather we didn't want to spend more than about $30 for a room and the guidebook only had weird back alley places listed, so on to Voronet and we found a nice well-lit small pension on the side of the road (yes, it has a few neon lights, which I'm come to accept attract men ...
Voronets, Romania gr8escape... retain vivid colour and detail. On most, the norther facade is barely evident. The fresco technique used was very thin. I tried to picture from side showing small section of remaining fresco. It was only a few cm (about 1 inch at most). That these survive at all is amazing. Since many had been untended for long periods, graffiti is evident. You can see the names and dates of people (look for the 1846 date). After leaving Bucovina, I had a rental car and drove through the ...
Suceava, Romania nkohare... Back to the kids since that is what the trip is about. We see about 100-150 people per day in the clinic and they do about 20-30 surgeries in 3 ORs upstairs. They come for miles (sometimes 100+ miles) to see the Americans in Botosani. They wait for hours sometimes in dark hallways with no A/C and no one complains about waiting. The Romanians wait for everything and know that things can take time. Kids are treated for everything from colds and fevers to parasites ...
Curasal, Romania mshields007... was scheduled for 15:30 today. Since I got back into town at 2:30pm, I had almost a good chunk of time available to make a pit stop and chill at the hostel briefly. Always a welcome thing when you've been moving around quickly. I ended up walking back down to the bus station a little early and found the space for the Radauti bus standing empty. Assuming it not to have arrived yet, I still thought I'd double-check the bus schedule inside. I was quite surprised then to find that they ...
Suceava, Romania xerius... includes the whole lot. It's going to cost me about a day's budget extra, but this way I hit the all in one fell swoop and can therefore cut my visit to the region by one day. Thus, one more day to tack on later, like on the Trans-Siberian (where I'll almost certainly need it!). So, I'm here for about three nights, then heading on towards the Moldovan border. Hopefully the weather will stay nice (but at the same time, not heat up again like it did a week back!).
Suceava, Romania xerius... the atmosphere when you see them blessing pieces of wood to be used in restoration or drawing water up from a well. We also visited the Monastery at Voronet which is also painted but in an original blue colour which has apparently been copied the world over... By now we had definitely seen enough religious buildings so we took the daily bus heading South towards the Transylvania region and Dracula country which will be our next stop.
