Sniffles and Tears

... The high point was when Mr. Wilson was asked what he had learned in China and he gave a detailed descripton of how to make Chinese dumplings. When we had our farewell ceremony Wednesday afternoon, both sets of students were quite emotional. Everyone was moved deeply and pledged to meet again. Our students were overwhelmed by the gifts they received both large and small. We each received a Haicheng Senior High School uniform. The Chinese seemed to appreciate our gifts: a ...

... and I played table tennis with our hosts. Later, I taught an English class on common pronunciation mistakes. At the end of the day, we had a cultural exchange. We had been warned ahead of time to prepare a performance, so we sang Frere Jacques in four languages including Chinese. Aaron and Katie both sang solos. We sang the school song and taught the Colonial shuffle ...

Sightseeing Day

... after we had to part company. Mr Howard told us that his host family found him a hotel because he was too tall. He was sorry to not have a host family, but he does have HBO. Tonight we had a "Western" dinner. Most of ordered pizza, which had a wonderful sweet crust. We are stuffed! Our students are very excited because tomorrow we spend the entire day in the school, attending classes, eating at the student canteen, and sharing art and sports activities. We are having a great time!

... group, so I must be brief. We are convening for a sightseeing trip. When we arrived at the school, it was full of students, on a Sunday. Our students were open-mouthed. The Chinese students were studying for upcoming exams. Music sounded (The Pachelbel Canon) to change classes. Katie asked me if I would change the bells to music. I responded, "If students come to school on Sunday I will."

Needle in my nose!

... Tuesday and Thursday I have class most of the day, then come home and go to one of the three restaurants by my house that I love. Wednesday I have kindergarten in the a.m. then Chinese lessons after that. I usually get home around 3, take a nap, and just blob around the rest of the afternoon/ evening. Friday I have less classes, and usually use the spare time to study Chinese. I still get done around 5, then it's straight to the Chinese ...

A Day in the Life...Part 1

As I've now been here a month (well I left for China one month ago today, I arrived one month ago tomorrow), I have noticed that many people are aware that China is vastly different from America, and want to know, how? This is a difficult question, China is definitely completely different but its hard to sum up all of the many small differences that total up to a completely different culture. I think one of the best ways will be for me to explain, in ...

Classes went well this week, but the newspaper we are supposed to use as a teaching tool is way over the heads of most students...and getting them to tell you anything is like pulling teach...without Novocaine ...

The First Few Days are the Hardest

Well, here I am in Anshan! I'm at the school right now, because my Internet at my apartment won't be up for a few days. Wow, I don't even know where to begin, i guess with the plane ride. Well, luckily for me the plane was not filled to capacity, so I was able to move to a seat on the aisle with an empty seat between me and the Chinese man on the other end, however i was endlessly jealous of the people in the two rows beside me who both had three whole seats to ...

... teacher then selected two student volunteers from each team. These students collected responses and wrote them on the board. I am still impressed by the presentation skills of the students. Each student leader gave an opening statement about their topics. One leader asked the class, "Who can tell me what the first slogan says?" Another student invited the class to read the slogan together. They acted as poised as an adult teacher. At the end of the class, the teacher had the ...

... costumed students and joined by Education Bureau officials. As we entered the auditorium, the students broke into loud applause. The student performances were extraordinary, featuring traditional Chinese dance, umbrella dance, Mongolian dance and even hip-hop. About halfway, the principals took the stage and in a last minute grab for an idea, taught the students "Old McDonald Had a Farm." The students had a great time singing EE-I-EE-I-O. We were given ...
