... a hallmark of the Grameen model for micro lending, as well as the resolve and clarity of purpose in the women who attended the meeting. Each participant seemed to understand the importance of these meetings as a concrete manifestation of their commitment to one another and to each other’s prosperity.
The experience of the meeting itself was moving. The first thing that strikes you is that the group was composed entirely of women from the ...
... wonderful grooms from her. She is wonderful! Elizabeth sleeps in some of the most bizarre positions and always gets a laugh out of everyone. Some of the babies: Sabie is the oldest of the bunch. She has been quite the biter lately. I have come out with many the scratch from her. But when she decides to be nice, she is wonderful. Lionel one of the younger ones who loves to cuddle but always loves a good playtime. Madame is one of my favorite of ...
Tzaneen, South Africa vjkd10... Hyena has white poo because it eats all of the bones of its prey so it gets a ton of calcium. The impala have little black sent glands on the bottom back of their legs so that when they are being chased, they can release it to deter the predator. The giraffe eat these trees that are full of thorns and they have developed a tongue that doesn't get cut by them and the pallets of their mouths are extra hard. Giraffes always eat the leaves off these trees which are ...
Tzaneen, South Africa vjkd10... pulls out hair in chunks. Oh well. Oh yeah, the amount of frogs that are here is incredible! No matter where you go, you always see one, especially at night when you have to pay extra attention to try to avoid stepping on them. I will send you pictures of the monkeys as soon as I can, but it is better for me to build up a relationship with them before I take pictures of them so that they aren't upset by an unfamiliar person.
Tzaneen, South Africa vjkd10... did some raking and digging to make a firebreak, and spent two shifts with the babies. The babies are amazing yet frustrating at the same time. They need constant attention and someone to cuddle with because they are all orphans of different ages (3 days - a few months). When they nap and play around me, they are adorable, but when they jump on your head and grab chunks of your hair, it is really annoying. Plus, we spend around 4 hours per shift just ...
Tzaneen, South Africa vjkd10... the closer we got to camp. It was like entering a modern version of the Jurassic Park. Our night time arrival at camp was greeted by a visit of one of the resident wild lions, Subpipe (pronounced Subpeepay). They knew this because he'd been collared and the staff was monitoring him on the telemetry. A lion just outside our camp! And we were sleeping in tents?? Geez! So the first night was a little nerve racking - with a lion ...
Venetia Limpopo Nature Reserve, South Africa whatboundaries... myself included), 1 Austrian, 1 Mexican, and 1 Swede. I live with 3 Dutch guys; Frank, Daniel, and Thijs, and a Finnish guy; Janne, and we are awaiting one more guy. I have been having a blast with the Dutch guys so far, maybe I will even learn a little before I leave. The school arranged three days of "international student orientation" which was really just day trips around the country, which I think was ...
Cullinan, Magaliesberg, Maropeng, South Africa dmcgeh1... Selati and Mika. The work consisted of 2 drives a day... 1 at 4AM... yes, thank you, the other at 5 in the evening. We would go out and using telemetry, locate the lions, record their interactions and movements, and compile our research. Of course, this is a game reserve, so on the way many other animals often popped up to say hello... giraffes( hilarious), rhino, elephant, porcupine, wild dog, zebra to name but a few. Remember that all the animals are completely wild, so it was ...
Limpopo, South Africa lizbarticusAfter a great night's sleep outside, it was time to get going. I felt strong and ready for a rugged day in the heat. The trail took all day, and had us climbing and scrambling through red rocks. We saw a National Heritage site in the form of one of the oldest and largest Cycad's in ...
Makawane, Mpumalanga, South Africa off_road_clara... stretch south into Lesotho, our goal was to reach Sabie by nightfall. We set off into the mountains and were taken with the green tinge to the rock faces which looked spectacular with enhancement from the sun. We passed through the Abel Erasmus Pass (a tunnel through the mountain) to Worlds End at the top of the Blyde River Canyon. While not in the Grand Canyon league, it is very different and ...
