Day 20 - Te Aroha to Orere Point

... this overlooks Auckland and we could just make out the Sky Tower in the distance. Looked for a Camping ground in the area, only to find there were none!! Either we could head off into Auckland or double back on ourselves about 30 Miles to a campsite we passed earlier. We decided on the latter and stopped at Orere Point Top 10 Holiday Park.

Distance Travelled today – 306 km. Total Distance travelled 3989 Km.

East Coast return to Auckland

... much luck on the east coast am I?) We didn't hang around in Kaikoura so it was straight back to Picton to catch the ferry to Wellington. Quite unexpectedly some friends we met in Queenstown rocked up at the check in which was a nice surprise!! We had left them as they were heading for the west coast and us the east so we didn't think we would see them again. But then when you're travelling you bunmp into people all the time! So what ...

The rush around the north island...

... of the south, and the place where Mt Doom was filmed in LOTR. We drive for most of the afternoon and as it gets dark we get to the start of the walk, passing a magnificent Manor house set in the hills. We get to a secluded spot to free camp and pack up for the night, only disturbing the girl sleeping in the nearby car who comes to chat, a little freaked out by our presence. 23rd We wake up to a freezing cold morning where the only where to get out of bed is to wear two pairs of trousers ...

Kelly Tarlton (It's a guy!)

While we are here in Wellsford we're doing various day-trips. And todays expedition is underwater... "Kelly Tarlton's" is an aquarium in Auckland where the founder and creator (a dude named Kelly Tarlton) re-designed a stretch of sewer-pipes to function as an underwater world for visitors to enjoy. It may not be the biggest aquarium in the world, but walking through the pipes and being surrounded by sharks while the famous ...

Rich n Gee's Wedding (and Auckland)

Home again, well nearly home... but in the same country. Spent a few days milling around Auckland before heading off to Waiheke Island for the first NZ wedding... Rich n Gee. Big up's to Pammy for sorting some accommodation, which had a great view. Not that it mattered the first couple of days as the weather was poo. Didn't stop a great wedding though and it was awesome to catch up with ...

Our last day in the southern hemisphere.

... of the (few) advantages of travelling with a three year old is the queue jumping! We even got on ahead of the first class passengers on this flight and we were waved through the security check queues ahead of others! Although we were then delayed as they wanted to check Steven's rucksack as he had so many Bob the Builder vehicles in it the lady on the scanner wasn't sure about it. The flight was good as it was an ...

Having learned from the mistakes of many so called celebrities whose videos have ended up online without prior approval, all footage from Auckland Karaoke Night 2009 is available for purchase for the low low price of $19.95. As all rock stars must do from time to time, we took a couple of days off to rest the vocal chords. We decided to drive up to the Bay of Islands, a ...

Wining and dining on Waiheke Island

This being my first time in New Zealand I have to say that the place is brilliant. The scenery is amazing, you get great value for your buck but most of all the people are fantastic. After we arrived into the airport, Lyd's rellies brought us to a food court for some grub. Basically in these places you get loads of different food stalls and you just choose which type your after ...

Last day of the trip

... more traffic, plus there are some shops and restaurants. Had a wander round the shops and some lunch before heading back to the ferry. Shopped for a few souvenirs when we got back to the city, then back to the hotel to start getting ready to leave. Had a suitably memorable dinner for our last night - just a bit of a stab in the dark because it was the first place we looked at down at the Viaduct Harbour. Speciality of the house was food served on hot stones ...

Freaky In Waiheke

... physically incapable of speaking. Hmmm. We reached our stop, by this time watching the driver like hawks for any sign he may have given us. His large scary eyes found ours in the rear view mirror, and he nodded. That'll do us. As we collected our bags, the driver scribbled something on his pad about which of the cluster of unsigned roads by the bus stop was the one we'd requested, and off we got. Mike's directions didn't help much, so we phoned him. His further directions didn't help ...
