State Highway 6 Franz Josef, Westland National Park, South Island, New Zealand, 7952, 64-3-752-0054
Drove from Queenstown to Fox Glacier no problem (or no worries as they say in Australia and New Zealand). Edna drove most of the way and loved it. Told her she should get an automatic car in place of the Rav, so easy to drive. Franz Josef lovely again, scenery quite spectacular. Went out for a nice meal and early to bed as we had booked a helicopter ride to the Glacier for the morning. Well Edna and Linda were a bit nervous but they loved it when we got up there. Edna even sat in the front on...
Fox Glacier, South Island, New Zealand ednabuchanWe did finally manage to get away by 8.00 this morning (Wednesday) despite Barbara and I sleeping in until after 7.00! I took the wheel for the first leg out of Nelson, with Dave acting as DJ and B1 and B2 telling us where we were going wrong. It rained most of the way, until we stopped for breakfast at Murchison, a former gold mining town, where Dave and I swapped places. We then took the very beautiful scenic route along the coast from Westport to Greymouth and we stopped at several points...
Franz Josef, South Island, New Zealand nickadamsDetermined to make the most of our one full day in Franz Josef, we made a reasonably early start and had breakfast at a cafe on the main street. A charming Belgian girl took our order but unfortunately managed to duplicate almost everything, so Barb and Barb got 4 croissants each and Dave was in danger of being served so much bacon, eggs and particularly baked beans that he could have powered the helicopter that he and Barb had booked all on his own! While I started off on my trek up the gl...

... to let him behind the wheel).
We found our hostel at about 2 AM (again armed with an address and no map). After we found the place and parked, we realized it was SO cold up there! I was not prepared for NZ weather! I had a backpack of summer clothes I wore in Australia, which were useless now. We kind of made a joke when we walked up to the hostel door that sounded something like, "that would suck to sleep in the car here!" Hmmm. So we get to the front door and see that it is ...
Franz Josef, South Island, New Zealand rucamuffin... narrow 'alleyways' etc. One of the other guides had the misfortune of hitting his toe with an ice pick and had to be helicoptered out of the place. Had an absolute ball on the ice plains and didn't get back into town until around 5pm. Went for a few drinks and bit of food with Ali before heading back to hostel around 11. Planned to head to where the Kiwi group was staying bus was too fecked.
Franz Josef, South Island, New Zealand fruss... the town which knocked up a nice garlic bread and Denver Leg Venison Medallions seared and roasted rare, on a herbed sweet potato and pumpkin mash, Portobello mushroom and whole wild blueberry jus washed down with Rockburn Pinot Noir 2007 – this convinced me that there was somewhere in the South Island where fine dining was not just eating with a knife and fork! For the first time since Hong Kong I am now up to date with my blog!
Franz Josef, South Island, New Zealand hadwin... which I found very difficult. Every time I took a step forward I slipped back. After a few hours we reached the high point, where we got a fabulous view of the whole glacier. It was beautiful. We had more steep climbs and walks past lakes of a deep blue. There was lots of water on the glacier, which made it slippery - David even managed to put his foot in a puddle that looked like ice. After 6 hours scrambling about through the cracks and caves in the ...
Franz Josef, South Island, New Zealand angela_louise... ve to scale six ice walls with a pick and our krampons (all the time safely harnessed into some rope thing). Its great - the climbing is actually very difficult and for some reason girls seem to be better at it than men - as they get the idea of using their legs much quicker. Surprising given they spend most of the time with their legs in the air and not stuck in a glacier ;-). I manage four of the climbs which are ...
Franz Josef, South Island, New Zealand codownsean... hiking due to a recent heavy rain.

Knowing what was just ahead of me up Highway 6 - two impressive glaciers sitting incredible close to the ocean, a phenomenon unheard of elsewhere in the world - I cut my beach time short and drove onward to the of Fox Glacier. I arrived in this quaint town adjacent to the glacier just prior to sunset and was ale to capture some pretty cool shots of the dusk light reflecting off the glacier, followed ...
Franz Josef, South Island, New Zealand texaspeytonWellingtonist lendasime ühe väikseima lennukiga Westporti.
