Living in the Land Down Under

... the traditional leave. With rough seas comes good surf and Torquay is the self-proclaimed surf capital of Australia.  This beautiful coastal town houses Australia's very interesting surfing museum and is the host of Australia's longest running surfing competition every Easter at Bells Beach. We've also found a couple of really nice pubs on the south coast.  Up until now, many of the pubs we have encountered have been rather sparse and lacking character.  I had ...

Monday February 9 Malvern SA

We were up by 7.30 and Michael went for a jog. We had both slept well in the cool and quiet. We went out for our favourite Australian breakfast of granola, yoghurt, fresh fruit with honey along with a flat white. Then we bought groceries at the close-by IGA store, greengrocer and butcher. I went for a walk along Unley Road, the main road towards Adelaide, which has lots of small shops ...

A little hot

... a great snack. § An electricity black out is life threatening because your aircon and your fans no longer work and you are seriously going to be cooked!! § You no longer sit on a couch, why would you when you can settle down on the cooling tiles instead. § You need a stubby holder to keep the beer cold, not your hands warm § No one cares if you walk around with no shoes on ...

Adelaide

... long weekend, it would take a little longer for the new awning to be shipped to Adelaide and also for the caravan repairer to get the information and photographs to the insurance company and for it to be approved. We were hoping that it would all be organized for Wednesday to be fitted. We took a drive into the City for a look around as it is only 10 minutes to the City from Uncle John's place at Port Adelaide. The city was ...

Did we have a plan for 2008?

... on family sad times. No sad events this year. No funerals and although the older ones gave us a scare they all pulled through and are back living their lives. Old age may not be for wimps but with the characteristic, "what can you do" shrug, the old folks walk out of the hospitals and get back to living. A good example for us all. We were again fortunate to travel to both foreign and domestic lands. Amazing to me sometimes, is the realization that I often have more in common ...

Adelaide - Glenelg Beach

In the afternoon, Alexa and I had a nice walk on the beach after an Italian lunch at Glenelg. It is a beach and little town with much tourism. Good way of researching the Australian beach life. And again, weddings all over the place. Also quite Australian to have 4 grooms and ...

Fun in the sun

... would eat for some time waiting for me with my parents.  Finally someone emerges and says give her 15 minutes till she was ready.  The plane boards at 9:15 and that would put it at 9:00.  Angered now, I said screw it and went to spend some time with my parents because I won't see them for six months.  At around 9:10, we said goodbye and I marched down to the plane, not thrilled about my 13 hour and 13 minute flight in coach, stuck ...

Leaving Adelaide, third attempt

... for a drink in the pub. And two likely lads bowl in - Neil and Andrew from the Aberdeen Hostel in Northbridge, Perth. The two likeable clowns with whom I had many fearless sessions of reckless drinking. How we laugh as they tell me they were evacuated here by plane - because their train derailed in the Kalgoorlie area. They only gave the fruit picking lark about two weeks before walking away, disgusted by the scandalous working conditions and pay. So much for working ...

Leaving Adelaide, first attempt

Continued from ; Adelaide misunderstood I get the impression that Tony, the hostel manager, doesn't like me very much. First the parking ticket that's been re-addressed to him. Then the unspeakable disorder in the yard after three Poms drank Stella all day. Now he is confronted by a pickled cave man in Marks and Spencer's jockey shorts. No keys. I think I may go away for a few days and do some walking in the hills. I pack my kit and ...
