Glacier Bay National Park

We left Skagway on Wings of Alaska around noon on Tuesday. This was an eight seat, single engine airplane. We were running late, but Juneau is the hub for Wings, so they held the connecting flight to Gustavus for us. This was a Piper 207 with just 6 seats. Our pilot for the second leg literally helped us out of the first plane and directly into the next one. It was a quick 30 minutes to Gustavus. The Glacier Bay Shuttle Van was waiting to drive us the 10 miles to the park lodge. Jim's duffle ...

An 8 hour tour

Today we went on an 8 hour Glacier Boat tour on the Fairweather Express II. It was a great tour, we saw tons of sea otters, harbour seals, sea lions, a few whales, a Grizzly bear, and some people saw a black bear, but I didn't. Lots of eagles as well, The glaciers are really stunning, with some bright blue areas, and we got to see one calve, which was really cool, and very loud. Like super loud thunderstorms. I got a couple pics of the splash that the icebergs made as they fell, It was cloudy...

Juneau, Gustavus and Glacier Bay, Alaska

The highlight of our traveling during Tim's visit to Alaska in July was our trip to Juneau via the Alaska Ferry, and then from there flying to on a small prop plane to Gustavus and Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve (http://www.glacierbay.org/#introductio n_to_glacier_bay). Glacier Bay Glacier Bay National Park includes 16 tidewater glaciers, 12 that actively calve icebergs into the bay. The park encompasses snow-capped mountains, deep fjords, tidewater glaciers and freshwater streams. Th...

Great Endings

... bay, so we ate on the deck and had a nice good-bye.

The float plane provided fantastic views of the mountains, glaciers, and sea. We landed on the water air strip, which is parallel with the paved landing strip at the Juneau airport. We got of there late, arriving in Seattle about thirty minutes late. Tomorrow we will leave for Denver and the end of a terrific trip. If you're ever wanting to experience Alaska, make sure you enjoy with Kimber and her crew. What a trip!

Whale watching

... to Idaho Inlet. We sailed up the inlet, until dropping anchor near the river at the end which feeds into it. Although the wind kicked up, Kimber decided to lower the kayaks in the water and send us up the river to look for bears. We saw an enormous one just before we anchored. It was a brown bear (aka grizzly), that was grazing in the meadow. We hoped to see more after kayaking to a hiking spot.

<br ...

Water and Ice

... Canada, but it now sits on the US side of the border. There was, of course, an argument over whose glacier it was, and the international body that governs these things (can't remember the name) awarded its possession to the US. But I digress, we got to watch the glacier calf several pieces of ice, as well as row by a number of bird species. I took a lot of pictures of puffins, but I can't tell if they've come out or not. Between their ...

Glaicier Bay, Alaska

After spending a day at sea we entered Glaicier Bay. The temperature dropped to about 8 degrees celcius. It was strange but you could feel the excitment as we entered the bay. Everyone was anticipating something but most of us had know idea what to expect. Our ...

June 29 - Skagway

June 29, 2005 - Fishing! Got up at my usual time and went to the charter boat dock with five other caravaners where we boarded a fishing boat commanded by Captain Adam. We proceeded to go out in the harbor at Skagway and fish for king salmon that were about to begin their spawn trip up the small streams that emptied in to the harbor. Well, I caught the first fish which was an eight pounder. The second fish (caught by Jack) was a twenty pounder. The ...
