Whales to left, whales to the right, here I am

A travel blog entry by kramertown on Jul 16, 2014

Around 8am we cruised past the mouth of Glacier Bay and with everyone awake, Tom decided now would be a good time to take the zoom lens and go whale hunting. He was rewarded with a cluster of whales in the distance although all he could see was spouts. Shortly after that a pod of Dall porpoises zoomed by,which look like mini orcas. If you take …

Easy day today, after early start yesterday. We slept in to 6:30 (no alarm wake up time at Henlys house) and ate a leisurely breakfast. Tim then went off on what turned out to be an extremely muddy hike (ranger explained that there has been almost no rain this summer, so yesterday's deluge is just sitting on the top of the soil, basically), while I …

...and were met at the shed which passes for the Gustavus (pronounced Goo-stave-is) airport by a college student from Indiana (doing degrees in sociology and religious studies) in a Glacier Bay Lodge bus he calls the Green Dragon.

Arrival a the lodge is easy; they are all ready to check everyone in, and they take dinner reservations and …

After daylight was already an hour old, we joined this day at 0500 for a rapid departure on the flood current up to the head of this inlet. A Norwegian cruise ship was already casting its shadow over our anchorage, awaiting the park interpreter who would join the ship for the day.

We were well up the inlet before they got under ...

... our customary picture on the stairs, and then went back down to our room. Tonight, we had a towel-monkey swinging from a clothes hanger waiting to greet us! I think the monkey is one of the cutest so far. I was a bit worried looking out our window at the waves getting ever larger, hoping that they would calm down soon. I was disappointed when I heard that the crew was tying down the chairs, preparing for even larger waves and more rocking of ...

    It's all there is!

This is the only accommodation inside the national park, though I believe that there is another hotel and at least one B&B in Gustavus (a town of two roads). This lodge was built in the 1960s, and the furnishings have not been updated since, it would seem. The rooms are all twin beds (at least, ours is, and when I called and asked for another, I was told that is all there is.) No one warns you about this in advance. We would have stayed here anyway, probably, but the advance info is not very complete. The lodge dining room has a fairly limited menu, but the food is quite good. The service is very slow. There is a buffet breakfast available every day, so if you're going on the boat trip (HIGHLY recommended!), you don't have to worry about missing the launch due to slow service in the restaurant. Lots of programs.

The lodge is nothing fancy but in a great location. We enjoyed the dinner on the outer deck and the sunset was beautiful. The staff are kind. in the The room were simple. The lodge had wireless but did not work. We also included a boat tour on the trip and that was awesome, even though we ran aground. Loves the park staff. Big shout out to Ranger Emma Johnson. Thanks for taking care of us!
