Wednesday December 26th to Puerto Natales again The senora knocked on our door at 7.45am, and said `You are going ?`. `Yes, to Puerto Natales`, we said. `What time ?` (As if she didn't know, all the buses go at 8.30am). How unfriendly can you get. Cabanas Anahi are not recommended. The bus to Puerto Natales was a bit quicker this time over the rough Route 40, but we spent longer at the border, where the Chileans insisted on us taking all our backpacks out of the bus, and opening them. Our roo...
Puerto Natales, Chile bansemerWell after a long, almost 1900 mile flight down to one of the "last" cities on earth, our group took a 3 hour bus ride to Puerto Natales where we stayed the night. The region of Chile where we explored this last trip is called Patagonia...and let me tell you, it is stinking cold down there!
Puerto Natales, Chile krissy1285Day 116: December 8, 2007 Punta Arenas to Puerto Natales We had a good breakfast at the hotel dining room which overlooks the church on the plaza from the 2nd floor. After that, I gathered the passports and went over to the bus company office to buy the tickets to Ushuaia for the 11th. After I made the purchase, I asked the stupid question, I thought, if the bus left from the bus terminal. She looked at me with surprise and said that it left from the office. I'm glad I asked! I returned to th...
Puerto Natales, Chile magellanicMark 15/3: Perito Moreno Glacier This is the massive highlight of this part of Chile and one of the reasons that people come into El Calafate (stayed at Hostal del Glacier-Libertodor) for just 80k´s down the road is the Perito Moreno Glacier in the Los Glaciers National Park (to do the tour from the hotel its A$128 pesos plus A$40 pesos park entry). Its pretty cool, with towering faces of ice 60-100m pushing down into the lake with regular bits of the glacier breaking off and crashing into th...
Puerto Natales, Chile markandbecs We said goodbye to everybody from Table 12 on the boat and while they all got pick ups from the dock we hoisted our bags on to our back and headed for the Budget Rent a car office via an ATM en route (we had no Chilean currency just some US dollars). Cash rich once more we found the office and collected our car (or rather pick up - we had been told best to get a high clearance vehicle for the unpaved roads).
I had never driven a manual left hand drive before and bless the residents o...
... dirt road and takes about an hour and a half. The other route was a bit deceptive, as it was on paved highway for the first half of the distance, but then split off onto dirt road again. For where we were going, we should have probably taken the first route, but the long way around gave us some incredibly stunning vistas on the way there. We kept stopping the car every few minutes to stop and take pictures. That's the advantage of having your own car. We also saw lots of ...
Torres del Paine, Patagonia, Chile segacs... minutes earlier we were taking off pullovers and jackets because of a scorching hot sun. (The ozone layer over Patagonia has been completely destroyed, the number of skin cancers went through the roof, and we get burnt in double quick time.) The first day was especially wet, so I didn't do anything. Given how much life costs there, it's a luxury to waste time in Patagonia... :) I wanted to go kayaking or horse riding in remote areas, but sadly the prices were ...
Puerto Natales, Patagonia, Chile terredeshommes... shot too from the constant pounding on them when you are carrying an extra 20 kg´s. 7 days is enough I think for any hike - awesome trek but after 7 days all you want is a hot shower and some tasty grub - only so much pasta and tuna you can eat. Torres Del Paine National Park comes very highly recommended - if you have time make sure to do the full circuit. It will most likely take you 6 or 7 days but when you see Grey Glacier you will know why you were ...
Puerto Natales, Patagonia, Chile ray_harrington... we got some good shots anyway. The 3 hour walk down was just has hard with the steep climb on the boulders making it a bit difficult and the legs were feeling it the next day. 5/2/09 Said my goodbyes to Adam as he was heading to Ushuaia and I was on my way to El Calafate but I only got 70kms down the road to Cerro Castillo on the border crossing with Argentina and while I was getting fuel a tour group of about 10 came by and they end up being Motoaventura ...
Puerto Natales, Patagonia, Chile chileadventure... our first night in the park we camped 5 minutes from the ice field. Eventually when we arrived to the free camp, as there are nice expensive not free camp sites and not so nice free ones, we set up our tents, pulled out our sleeping bags and devoured our food before we headed to bed around 11pm, after the sun finally went down. Throughout the night I awoke cold to the sound of pouring rain on the roof of the tent, not a good start. When we all got up in the ...
